i had a slant cabient with 65's and hated them. it had "wierd mids" in the middle frequency of my 5150. it just didnt vibe well with me.

of course, you gotta get them cranked to sound good... thats one thing i didnt purchase the cabinet for lol.

im a big fan of birch plywood cabinets. but i cant offer any actual cabinets that have had "it" all together. i think the best thing to do is find a speaker you love, and then pick a cabinet that meets or exceeds your expectations and go from there. at least thats what i would do if i were you. it would make the cabinet hunt alot less stressful in trying to find that one cabinet that has it all.

does anyone know if marshall be putting gk12-100's in any new cabinets? im wondering if i sam ash will have a cab i can go jam through. i keep hearing excellent things about them.

Something wasn't right then...because the 65's don't have very pronounced mids like v30's. I play my 65 loaded cabs at very low volumes and they sound great.

Which 65's did you have? The RI's or the originals?

i had the originals. the cabinet from 1982, not sure the circa of the speakers but they were definately the original speakers in that cabinet. i sold the cabinet to overthemountain for the same price i bought it. theres nothing wrong with the cabinet at all. i had my amp cranked through it and it sounded pretty good but not as good as my 5150 cabinets, but being as though ive never heard 65's before, i really dont have anything to go off of. the one thing i loved about them, was that it gave my 5150 that marshall growl when cranked. it sounded fucking awsome, but again that was my "inside" cabinet that i used at home for practice so i just decided to sell it off.

at lower volumes which is what i bought the cabint for, there was a mid hump. imagine starting at the top of a hill, going down slightly and then dropping off after 3/4 to zero. that was the EQ curve of that cabinet in reference to lows, mids, highs with my ears. i think i would love 75's but people keep saying the Gk100's are even better than those for metal grind and low end. so im not sure what i will get next.

What code was on the speaker cones that you owned? There are a few different versions. I believe most people like the 1777 cones.

i didnt know about the code stuff when i checked the speakers. i just saw really old and vintage 65's which i was stoked about. im sure overthemountain could open the cabinet up and check the codes. im quite curious actually... i didnt know there were different versions.

the cabinet was a lead series cabinet though not a bass series. so im guessing they were the ones for guitar. but who knows :dunno:

65s and bright British amps are a match made in heaven (figuratively). They have a very full low end that compliments typical Marshall voicings (not too much bass, bright highs).

No so much with modern super bass heavy amps. Too much low end from the amp into a low end accentuated speaker = boominess, mud, etc.

has anyone tried the Port City 4x12OS yet? I play with a Cornford MK50 II head for high-gain stuff and have been looking at the Mills Afterburner 4x12, but I'm really curious about the new port city cab as well. I've heard that the older port city 4x12 standard cab had more of a vintage-vibe going for it and decided on trying the Mills, but then I heard about the new OS and I'm interested in hearing more about it (I also really like the new look).

You're right. I was thinking of considerably darker, smoother & bassier amps that would not match well with 65s, like Uberschall, Mako, Diezel. The Recto has that crazy sizzle that can compensate for the 65s smooth top end.
