The unending cabinet quest.

I've had experience with only some Major brand cabinets. So far vintage 30's seem to be where I'm most comfortable.

A while ago I was able to try a Krank Krankenstein head with the matching 4x12, now of course the amp left something to be desired, but it had this killer low end growl that I would love to have. And I'm thinking it had more to do with the poplar cabinet and the texas heat speakers??

I've had experience palying the Meathead with Mike's VHT V30 loaded cabinet and it was great as well as a new oversized recto cabinet, as well as my eminence loaded splawn, the splawn is my least favourite, but I'm 100% sure it's the speakers.

For when I have my Meathead I'd like to have a perfectly suited cabinet, I've read a bunch of the threads on here but they are so scattered so if everyone can chime in with the type of music they play and the amp and cabinet combination they love the most so far to give me a good idea.

I play mostly metal, but I'm looking for what everyone wants hahahaha so let's post it up!

ive heard great things about the G-K100's, wouldnt mind trying some out.
never selling my trusty 5150 straight cabinet
would love to try out a cabinet 12L's
would love to try out a mesa cabinet

but if i could own 1 or 2 of them all, i would. those my personal favorites, or ones i would like to try and would recommend.

I read a thread on TGP a few minutes ago where some studio guy compared lots of speakers and found the Scumback H75's and Celestion G12M's to sound the best across the spectrum in a studio. I am going to have to look for some of those to load into a new 2X12 that I am looking to pick up.

I play mostly metal and hard rock, and of the cabinets I've owned, the Mills Acoustics have been the best for my tastes. I liked my Krank cab, the solid poplar construction was pretty killer for the heavy tones, but the Mills just has more resonance and projection, while still keeping a thunderous tight lowend. I think it completely walked on the Recto OS cab I owned at the same time. I did like certain cabs a lot with certain heads, like my Framus Cobra cab w/greenbacks paired with the Cobra head, and an old Marshall 1960AV w/V30 paired with a 2ch TRec.

I really live with the modo....Bright head = rear loaded cab.....Dark Head = Front loaded cab. Seems to balance things out better. Cabs make a huge difference on tone.

The Mills is what I'm really thinkin about, although I will be honest the Krankenstein cabinet does have my attention, only based on what I remember of it!

I really wish there was one place that had all the cabinets and we could just go and try them all hahaha perfect world I guess!

I think I'm just going to chill out and wait for my Meathead to be done, then start on this bullshit quest!

I need to get the rest of the rig cased and ready to go first!

I'll probably just stay with V30's!

I have used Marshall vabs with V30's for years and years. Jut played a VHT Fatbottom and lovedit. I went ahead and took advantage of the MF 20% off and bought 2. First cab I have heard in a long time that I really liked more than my Marshalls.

I have played all kinds of music and I keep coming back to one cab. I always end up playing my Mojo 4x12 with 2 Hellatone 60L's and 2 WGS Veteran 30's. Everything just sounds great through this cab and speaker combination.

I do have an Emperor 6x12 on its way. There is a chance that this cab might upset the balance a bit.

I like H30 and Vintage 30 mix best. If I played mostly metal I would use 100 and V30. My self I do not like speakers in a X pattern. I would put the V30's on top. I feel the 100 is a 1000 times better than the 75. Cab ..... good luck there are a number of good ones and taste.

i had a slant cabient with 65's and hated them. it had "wierd mids" in the middle frequency of my 5150. it just didnt vibe well with me.

of course, you gotta get them cranked to sound good... thats one thing i didnt purchase the cabinet for lol.

im a big fan of birch plywood cabinets. but i cant offer any actual cabinets that have had "it" all together. i think the best thing to do is find a speaker you love, and then pick a cabinet that meets or exceeds your expectations and go from there. at least thats what i would do if i were you. it would make the cabinet hunt alot less stressful in trying to find that one cabinet that has it all.

does anyone know if marshall be putting gk12-100's in any new cabinets? im wondering if i sam ash will have a cab i can go jam through. i keep hearing excellent things about them.

What speakers are in your Splawn cab? I would look at swapping them out and keeping that cab. I love mine. I have one Splawn with Gov/MoW's and one with Splawn SB/BB's and they both sound great. I am selling my OS Recto 4x12 and my Marshall 4x12 and getting one more cab from a local guy, Paul Kress. I have one of his 2x12's and I just loaded it with 2 EVM 12S's. That cab sounds crushing now. I am not a huge fan of the G12K or the EVM 12L though. I like a little smoother, "creamier" sound to my speakers.

i had the originals. the cabinet from 1982, not sure the circa of the speakers but they were definately the original speakers in that cabinet. i sold the cabinet to overthemountain for the same price i bought it. theres nothing wrong with the cabinet at all. i had my amp cranked through it and it sounded pretty good but not as good as my 5150 cabinets, but being as though ive never heard 65's before, i really dont have anything to go off of. the one thing i loved about them, was that it gave my 5150 that marshall growl when cranked. it sounded fucking awsome, but again that was my "inside" cabinet that i used at home for practice so i just decided to sell it off.

at lower volumes which is what i bought the cabint for, there was a mid hump. imagine starting at the top of a hill, going down slightly and then dropping off after 3/4 to zero. that was the EQ curve of that cabinet in reference to lows, mids, highs with my ears. i think i would love 75's but people keep saying the Gk100's are even better than those for metal grind and low end. so im not sure what i will get next.
