My Ceriatone Yeti arrived yesterday and I've had a couple of hours with it this arvo and last night.
As it's new and unfamiliar and with all the switches (2 gain knobs and master, era and two bright/boost switches - plus the 'pussy trimmer') it is definitely trickier to dial in that a normal basic amp. Once I looked at the manual for the Chupacabra and spent some time tweaking I got the sounds I was looking for...which was a clean, ACDC, Van Halen, Iron Maiden and some detuned metal tones.
Straight up, it's an awesome amp and I'm extremely happy with it.
Nik was fantastic to deal with and even did me a custom tolex job (dark purple with dark cream ends and gold piping - looks really cool and is very original). The amp arrived perfectly presented with tube retainers and the pussy trimmer (inside the Chupa) on the back of the Yeti which was very cool and handy.
The Jose master is a little harder to get used to as whilst the volume on all 3 'modes' (60s, 80s and 90s) is ultimately the same, the taper is WAY different. For example the 60s mode can be loud on 3 but the 90s mode needs 6 or 7 to get similarly loud. Get them all to 9 and they are about the same level. It's ultimately not a biggy as it's a single channel amp and you dial in your sound and off you go.
I found the clean is great. Hugely better than the JVM410h I test drove. Warmer, thicker, more chimey and way more dynamic (and the JVM was fingers in the ears loud). It's got great cleans and IMHO it's not inferior to my Soldano or Sherlock pre's cleans through my VHT 2150/2502 clone poweramp (I get some great cleans with this setup). I don't think it even sounded inferior to my Vox AC30 head I just sold either. Just a Marshally flavour without any mud or usual Marshally muffliness. It's got the best clean by a country mile compared to any proper high gain amp I've had or personally played through.
It also has much more gain than my mid 90s Dual Recto. Plus it's really tight with zero flab in the bottom end. It doesn't need a boost or a OD as it has plenty of gain...it's not a 'metal amp' but it can do metal no problems. Not modern, bottom heavy metal as it's a Marshall at heart but it does have a solid bottom end. It might sound thinner than expected down low compared to some modern metal amps with 6L6s but I found it great in this regard...and it's tight.
I'm running it through an Orange PPC212 CB with V30s which I thought wouldn't work but they sound great so I'm going to stick with this setup. It wasn't too middy (I like mids though) and it didn't have any annoying fizz or high end.
This amp whilst a single channel is the bargain new amp of the decade for me personally. It's the Marshall I always wanted but couldn't find. I've owned a hot rodded early 80s JCM800 100watter half stack, played extensively through a early 70s Plexi 100w half stack, test drove a JVM, a SLP reissue, a Metropoulos, owned a Mesa Recto half stack, a pretty decent rack setup and this amp kicks arse.
I did a quick A/B against my rack (used pedals for the rack as well) and the Yeti sounded awesome. It just roared like...a Yeti?
It cost me AUD$1300 delivered to my door...for this I get a hand made, PTP turret board, Jose hot rodded Marshall clone with Sozo's, 100w, big transformers, custom tolex, FX loop and it sounds like the monster it is.
If you were thinking about a Chupa or Yeti, they really are worth considering. I'm not sure if I'll be able to get clips up but I'll see what I can do (even if I got them, they may sound like complete crap with my camera). I'll take some static pics tomorrow anyway.
It's early days but me already loves my Yeti
