the part showed up on Saturday . I put it in the amp but I am having problems . The HBE needs the BE to run . I thought they were pretty much independent of each other but they aren't . I figured out how to make it work using a diode to separate them when on the BE side but when I switch to the BE I get a terrible ground hum . Not really sure why .
Im not done trying to figure it out but at this point its not looking to promising . I am not an amp tech so maybe some of you who know more about this stuff can chime in and give me some Ideas .
I don't think it will make a difference, but you can try to short the P,G, and K of the unused half of the HBE triode. Just use a piece of buss. When you first posted this my thoughts were that it was going to be tricky with grounding the switching relay. Where did you ground it to?
I don't think that is going to make a difference (but I really don't know cause most of this is over my head ). The BE seems to work independently of the HBE (meaning I can leave the input to the HBE disconnected and the BE still works.) but not vica versa.I'm grounding the shields on the chassis and the relay on the chassis also at a different point . I'm using a ground activated relay meaning that when I apply ground to the switch on the relay it switches(its not a momentary switch and ground has to remain or it switches Back) . The BE is on the "Switched side" meaning when I apply ground and make it switch I get the BE . I was thinking that maybe somehow the ground I'm using to switch it is bleeding into the signal.Makes me want to try it with an optical relay and see what happens .
I repeat I am not a tech and may just be chasing my tail .
I'm going back to working on my other - non Friedman JMP and do some research and think on this a while.

The BE does work on it's own.
Why not just ask Dave if this can be done? Call Tone Merchants and ask for Trace. He'll be able to tell you. When Dave says he has allot of amps to get done and that "It's allot of work for just two people", he is talking about Trace. He's a great kid and does allot of the mods, if not all. I spoke with him for a long time once.

1st don't you think it would be better to ask me. His name is Travis by the way. To set this straight Travis helps me with some mods but I have my hands in all of them. These days I am doing most all of the mods myself as he is busy assembling my amplifiers. As far as this relay thing it can be done and is easy to do. The relay is just taking the hbe in and out of the chain sort of like a pedal. I does get a bit complicated as far as switching noise and such. Its hard just to explain it here though.

I really didn't want to bother you with it Dave I know you have got enough to do without trying to educate me on how to do something like this . I am just basically taking the hbe out of the circuit with the relay . Now that I know it can be done without the noise I will keep working at it .

Anyone of you guys are welcome to chime in with some info to help figure this out.

I give up for now at least . I've tried relays ,jfets and mosfets and everything I do causes a bad hum on the BE .

Why not call Dave? He gave you the invitation above
