The Beatles had formulae too. McCartney spoke about it many years ago, that he changed his pop song formula in Wings to make it different from his Beatles formula.
Every hit song will eventually lead back to Pachelbel's Canon in D
edit: I remember Paul Stanley talking about writing "I Was Made for Loving You"; he enjoyed dancing at Studio 54, and he realized he can write a disco hit, went home one night and wrote Kiss' second biggest hit in a few hours, with a little help from Desmond Child in the studio. I recall he said, "I can do that. I can write a hit disco song." and he did, making Casablanca label happy too.

The whole keyboard layout thing was a revelation, as far as how he wrote songs.
