This is true......Im surprised Willie didn't do it.
It was his home field.
Both the polo grounds and ebbits are a few yrs before i was hatched
Earliest memories are the 71 Mets
I imagine he hit HRs center left or center right but not dead deep center. Babe Ruth hit a HR there deep center at 460 feet but this was before the 483 Dimensions or longer dimensions in general as it varied a bit over time at Polo Grounds........
Especially to clear those fences back then at that length and especially relative to parks now a pretty tremendous feat in either case. Kiner may have done one too but yeah not dead deep center but as said no joke to reach those walls and clear them in either case for any man and even the best of the best of their time and well the real GOATs even relative to players now......
Honestly even dudes like Ortiz, Pujols or Trout, Ohtani, Judge or Stanton in their prime would agree hitting a HR in that park anywhere in the center nvm deep dead center would take above normal human strength even amongst people on their level and even they would probably not be able to hit a HR deep dead center at Polo Grounds...... Pretty much an almost impossible feat even for the best of todays time.....
Mays did have a catch there of many but yeah......
"The Catch".....
And given the distance and the park..... A catch like that at Polo Grounds wasn't just any catch..... I think people forget that or don't talk about it enough.
If you truly stop to think about it what is the probability/likelihood of a catch like that being caught running that distance in such a short period of time, with your back against the ball as youre chasing it down combined with how hard that ball got hit and it's exit velo just shy of that fence......
Nvm the type of ground a player in the outfield has to cover on a field like at Polo Grounds given the dimensions..... Nvm that this is even before analytics/statistics, computers or the fucking StatCast Era
I would not be surprised if it were 0% and impossible for just about anyone else other than Mays.....
A catch with a 0% chance/probability/likelihood of being caught that is caught.......
Now ain't that truly something and nothing short a true miracle on the field and this green/blue Earth.
Willies incredible feat and "The Catch"...... At Polo Grounds means that much more and you'll never have anything like that ever ever again....... We all know "The Catch" but yeah I mean the context behind it which isn't talked about enough IMO gets lost...... I've seen some good ones in my life but never one like that and probably won't ever see one like that ever in real life or otherwise......
Here's to you Willie "The Say Hey Kid" Mays ...... Up in a field of dreams
