This tone...?

Shy of several cranked plexis, is there anything that will get this core tone without getting one thrown out of a club? The Blue channel of my 5153 just won't get this "spongy." The entire LWAN DVD is just so full of badass tone. And unlike his earlier tone, you could actually play more that just VH with it. Any advice would be great! Thanks!

I think that Ed's pants have a lot to do with it

I remember something on here from Steve about a wet/dry setup that he could get that tone pretty dang close.

It is good tone.

Although, by this point, I thought he was off of cranked plexis and onto something else? SLO maybe :dunno:

I was thinking same thing. SLO prob W/D/W with some detuned slap back or something at this point.

Definitely the Bradshaw rack era, you can see the RS10 on the deck. Also sounds like the period where that pickup started to loose one coil, sounds like a big tele bridge pickup...

He wasn't using the SLO at this point. This is still Plexi with the wet/dry or w/d/w set-up. The SLO didn't come into the picture until the recording of For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge. Ed's Marshall was acting up at the time, hence why he brought in the SLO.

It isn't the Plexi, but JCM800s. Similar setup to 1984 tour, but running a stereo rig (JCM800 => load box => Eventide H3000 (possibly a 910) => H&H V800).

He did still use the 12000 on the record (and on OU812).

60's and 70's Super Leads. Here's a pic of the rig for the 5150 tour.

Help me understand what I'm seeing in the pic. It looks like the top three amps in the rack on the left are Plexi's. Aren't Plexi's and Super Leads the same thing? All the other amps look like 4-input JMP's.

Those amps are backups. He was using an old Marshall into the Bradshaw rig. At this point, he didn't use a middle dry cab though. Bradshaw tried to convince him to try it, but he wanted to just stick with the stereo Left and Right. The harmonization was via a 949. The rest was pretty much the same he's used forever, which are the 2 SDE3000s, PCM70, etc.

This is one of the best hard rock tones of all time. I always thought it had the perfect amount of effects without getting messy, and had a great smooth, but edgy Marshally tone.

Yeah, I've seen the pictures of his rug from that era. Years ago I played a late 80s JCM 800 that totally had that core tone to it. Wish I wouldhave picked it up. It has that fat chewy vibe to it.

I have that on VHS...... LOL LOL LOL
great tone. His main marshall slaved into stereo set up described above.

Nah man that hair is real :D

The core tone is really just an old Marshall cranked to 10. It's round, not too edgy or gainy. . .sustain.

You can get it with a Superlead, JMP, or 800. Throw that specific set of effects on it, and you'll be 90% there. Of course, having Ed's hands is the real key.

ah...the quest ...often times it leads you right back where it all started...the Marshall ;)

I have some nice amps in my stable but the basis for me is always been the JCM800 2203 w/ 6550's and an SD 1 in front...it doesnt get more simple than that ;)

Yep, for a great straight up live 'rock' tone, a good Marshall is very hard to beat. There's just something about them that just 'work' live.

There is a video of Ed playing down at Sammy's club in Cabo Wabo. He has one SLO on the stage and his tone was really good. I think an SLO with w/d/w or a detune Boss PS5 and delay would capture the old 5150 tone no problem if you don't want to go through the trouble of slaving and such.

I guess I have forgotten how to embed videos! Sorry chaps. The tone in the video is good though.

the sponge comes from volume... why not bck off the preamp gain on the blue channel but get that master up to 6 or 7? i bet you get the sponge..
