Hot take: Fender planned this whole thing from day one, and the cease and desist letters going to US builders right now are exactly the evidence they were missing when they lost the Strat body shape case in 2009.

Interested in your thoughts and opinions as always! Enjoy fam.

If they are sending cease and desist letters to US builders they're even dumber than we previously thought.

They lost their case in 2004, not over cease and desist letters, but because they spent decades, a lot of them, not defending their shit.

Right. Like a statute of limitations.

Apparently it is now in Germany.

Strats are iconic. If you want a “non Fender” Strat roll your own with licensed wood.

I don’t get the drama—building a business around copying others’ designs always seemed dirty to me anyway

Germany had nothing to do with the case in 2004. That was US specific.

I agree it's dirty, but frankly I'm not even hip on Mexican or Indonesian Fenders, much less Squires.

I get it but I don’t get the hand wringing/pearl clutching on all the forums over this. If you want to sell guitars with your name on them, design the shape yourself.

The point is to bleed their competitors out with frivolous lawsuits.

FMIC can afford to pay. Can Friedman? Splawn? Luxxtone?

I guess I haven't seen much hand wringing. It's news relating to stuff all of us have and use daily. So we're talking about it.

Really I was talking about it decades ago when I was getting into Rickenbackers.

Nobody at "Fender" designed the shapes.

The man who did died decades ago.

Do tell us more why a brand owned by a car dealership company has more say to the basic tele shape than, say, MusicMan or G&L (RIP)

I just have always thought it was one of the ugliest body/headstock shapes. Just looks soft.

The super strat is way better

People have the choice to blindly repeat the past or deliberately build on it.. True innovation has been displaced by regurgitation.

Henry Ford is dead too but I still don't think rando companies should be selling Mustangs. Or Model Ts for that matter

The headstock looks like a musical note but I think it was basically ripped off from a bigsby design. The body looks like an industrial toilet seat.
