Time to change electrolytic caps on amps from the 80's?

I have changed all the electrolytic caps on all my amps that were made prior to 1980, but just wanted to know when/if I should worry about changing caps on my Marshall 2553 silver jubilee or Mesa mark IVA (from 1990). I also have an '84 Marshall JCM800 2 channel combo I am working on (bias, scratchy pots)

So when is it time to change the electrolytic caps on these amps from the 80's/early 90's?

The rule of thumb is 20 years on supply caps, but it's just a rule of thumb. Caps can go in under 5 minutes if you solder them wrong or if they get too hot, especially lower rated ones. If the amp goes a long time without being played and the caps weren't discharged following their final use, this can damage their ability to function properly as well.

So it would be good practice to power off with the standby engaged?

If by standby engaged you mean in the "play" position, then according to Mike Fortin, yes. Ive been doing it that way since hearing it from him and I havent run into any problems.

Interesting, I have been turning off the standby switch first, then the power switch. I can start reversing this.

On my amps in question, I do use them regularly and I know that helps.

Just curious with people who have Mesa mark III's, IIC+, Marshall JCM800's etc if they still have the original electrolytic caps?

as far as I know my MarkIV from 1990 hasn't had any work done on it.....still sounds fantastic (but I only took ownership of it this year)
