Tool Stranglehold

I am a Tool fanboy for sure. I get the criticisms too! This cover is sick. Maybe its my tizum but tonally I just love listening around to each member and what they are doing. When I finally got to see them live a couple of years ago my mind was blown on a few parts that I thought were for sure guitar but turned out to be bass parts. The subs alone from that show blew the hairs of my arms back - that show was drugs for me.

Have they played this live recently? I remember hearing this back in the late '90s I think.

sounds like a typical Tool song to me.. starts off with a tense kind of build up which im expecting to turn into something really cool and epic.. and then it just never turns to anything really cool or epic and im like wtf :dunno:
Dude I’m not a tool fan boy at all but they are amazing and songs do go somewhere imo . And I enjoy the ride. But I’m not a huge fan. But maybe that’s changing

You get it

Yeah this is an old one. I dig it, but not one of my faves from them.

Their cover of No Quarter is mind blowing. I think it's better than the original. I imagine what it must have been like to see that song live. When the drums kick in for the first time during the interlude, the universe opens up lol.

Their music isn't always about hard-hitting get pumped moments. sometimes it's about zoning out in a dark room and being introspective.

This 110%.

I think many people expect the typical quicker build and release type structure that so many other bands do ad nauseam.
Many criticisms of their longer songs tend to ignore that it isn't all about the guitar riff leading the song at all times, most often folks forget that when Adam pulls way back and drones away, he's allowing the spotlight to focus on what Justin and/or Danny are building slowly, not just in the flashy 'look at me' spotlight parts either where the other guys really take off. Many times it can be really subtle and understated but it's still the Drummer or the Bass leading the song for a while, not the guitar riff.
Heavy metal and Hard Rock music has been guilty of being very heavily guitar focussed since the 70's, 80's and 90's, and that it's far less common for the guitar to sit back and let the song evolve through the rhythm section rather than driven by the riff constantly. I guess many folks can perceive a laid back guitar part as being 'boring', but I think that it's really the guitarists way of saying "Hey, really listen to THOSE guys, not me, for a while"

I think that's a lot of what 'Fear Inoculum' is about and why many people perhaps could find it boring and long winded.
Well, yes, they are bloody long songs, and it takes an effort sometimes to get through the whole album, but it's an album where Adam's guitar isn't the central part and he comes and goes as required to work within the song. It's about sitting down through the entire album and taking in all the parts. Somedays we have the time for that experience, other times we don't have that long to wait and just want a quicker hit.

Just my 2c

I totally agree . Those moments of silence even in guitar can say a lot more than playing . I like that about tool .

You need music while you do it.
I bake 24 hours a day

i meant listening to Tool baked in a dark room lol. for 30 years now, as crazy as that sounds, ive gone back every new album or every few years and listen to their whole catalog again trying to get into them and understand the genius other people are hearing, but i just hasnt happened. im ripping chalky bong hits right now listening to this again as i type this and im hearing the same thing.. it starts of promising, starts getting boring, but wait.. heres another build up part thats gonna lead to something cool.. oh, more toms and droning guitars. wheres my weed?
