Couldn't you get the same effect as top wrapping just by raising the tailpiece higher?

Pretty close. But it looks goofier than hell.

Yep. That pretty much covers it.

I do top wrap my LP but will try the spacer thing with old string balls on the next restring.

I haven't tried it in years but don't really recall noticing anything different. For me the SLIGHT inconvenience of stringing the string backwards was enough for me to string it standard.

I heard that Van Halen strung his LP standard on the first album, so I think I'll stick with that.
