i don't know why i'm so surprised at how insane mark plays on this track

1) he makes the best VH toneclips/mods in the biz
2) he plays identically to young eddie
3) he plays identically to young yngwie
4) he is the lead guitarist for jefferson starship
5) he makes a POD sound miraculous

rockstah appreciation

here's a question that has haunted me since i first heard yngwie-how in the world do you go from blazing scale passages to that humongously wide vibrato???? do you have really loose string tension? tuning to Eb helped. he had scalloped frets which i understand but you....?

the two things that stumble me are the hand position and technique to play fast lines like that mean thumb more centered on the back of the neck and light touch, then to transition to thumb grabbing over the top and swinging the string like a maniac just doesn't compute for me.

i hear it as a major problem for others too, bending without vibrato, maybe for fear of banging into others strings, or bending the predictable boring notes due to ease of staying in the first pentatonic box, or bending without properly finishing the thought/phrase metrically speaking, creating a panicked choppy phrase(me), but you and other blazers i admire switch back and forth effortlessly and can land on any note, or i should say the right note, with fierce vibrato!

Thanks man... glad you dig it. :)

We used to do these kinds of jams all the time back in the day. On Harmony Central and on here. It would be nice to bring it back and get people playing for a change instead of just talking about flipping amps...

One thing that i realize is that music speaks to people and its cool that my playing speaks to you. We play to communicate and its the biggest reward being received after all! Thank you!

i'm aware that some wont give two shits about what i do because we hear what we want to hear and in saying that its what i hear in any player, the wide vibrato, the speed that lends itself to what i practice and the way i practice/play.

What you hear in my playing or anyone else's that speaks to you leads to what you already hear and how you will be inspired to practice/play to get it out.

I wanted to start off my replay to you with "shut the fuck up" because you as well as anyone else in this thread has inspire me with your approach or even how you hear things differently. i dig what you said in your clip as well.

Its practice but if i was to give advice its only to think long enough about the rules if your trying to over come something but don't let the rules be the reason that you need to over come something.... if that makes sense... it doesn't matter where you have your hand on the neck unless its hindering you but to turn that around and be uptight about hand position IS hindering.

Bending and vibrato comes from practicing it just as much as comes from listening to it. One cant just focus on how you bend without listening to what you are trying to do with bending. I never paid any attention to the way Yngwie physically bends, only the sound. in my ear he does a good job of creating a voice with how he bends... if that makes sense. But i don't really try to copy, i strive to acquire the facility of "voice".

Also there is the way that you practice. this jam is nothing more than how i practice. record a progression and noodle over it until no one around can stand it anymore and then do it some more!

Anyway i'm rambling (probably telling you things you already know) in attempts to give something back because i do appreciate being received as a guitar player, just like anyone does.
