How does the Marsha compare to a Splawn QR? Both seem to be the pissed off Marshall tones.

I'm borrowing a Friedman modded amp and i dig it, it's got the BE, HBE, JBE, Saturation switch and a Fat switch. I like it a lot................but i still like my Fortin Cali modded Marshall more. :D
No HBE on that one. Just the c45/BE and Cantrell with the Fat, and Saturation switches. THe Saturation switch has JBE written on it as it needs to be engaged in JBE mode to be the Cantrell mod.

In my experience the modded amp is not as good as the ground up Marsha. Dave can only do so much with the stock components. When he gets to choose them all it comes together. That said I haven't played one of Mikes amps but I hear great things!
Makes sense to me. The amp I sent Dave was a high end amp with good iron, and he ended up changing much of the components that the manufacturer used as they were not to his preference. I have a feeling this particular amp would hold up quite well to the real deal as I think all but the iron is is to his spec/liking.

Allot of you will be surprised but the amp is...

Line 6 Bogner Spider Valve! OMG this thing is awesome, brings the brutlz and it has built in FX!

Saw this and immediately said "Dont listen to Brads opinions on amps anymore"...LOL I had one for a little while...like a week...and had to get rid of it as fast as I could..LOL

In talking with Dave Turner, he has me jonesing for a Marsha too, but just dont have the coin for one.

What the heck is a DAR Forza and why don't I have one? (Second question rhetorical.)

That's one cool-looking amp!!

My current amp stable:
1975 Marshall Friedman modded, k.s., effects loop, simple clean.
Metaltronix M1000
Lee Jackson xls 500
Lee Jackson xls 1000
1982 jcm 800

I contacted Dave last week about getting the jcm 800 modded and the cost of the mods was a little out of my reach right now. Then I read this thread........
Just got back from shipping the jcm 800 to Dave!

I gigged a JVM 410 for 2+ years and it is a great amp, I think the best new Marshall out in 20 years. I had a Quick Rod before that, and numerous old Marshalls. An amp built or modded by Friedman is the best money you will spend on an amp geared for rock/metal (no disrespect to the other great modders/builders out there). I have the simple clean and it sounds great. I play the amp at very low volumes at home, it sounds amazing at any volume over a whisper. Yeah, it is a little noisy, but it is a 75. I am sure the Marsha's are better.
Anyone looking for some cool Lee Jackson amps? I got 6 weeks to raise some cash! :)

Mike

This is relevant to my interests also. I think most will say Marsha but is it really $1200 better???

I can't believe noone guessed CCM. That's what I thought you had for sure. Glad to hear it's a Marsha!!! That just reaffirms my decision to save for one. To my ears all the other modded marshalls I hear have a certain sound to them and it seems they can never venture outside of that tone. (Camerons and Fortins still are versatile, but they always retain a certain sound, just my opinion)

The Marsha seems to retain a classic Marshall sound but can attain different voicings and sounds more open to my ears. God, to buy one with all the options I'd want would cost me over $4000. Clips please! And Congrats.

BTW, I thought Dave quit doing the JBE mod???

The Splawn has its own sound, you can tell it is not a Marshall. It is a great amp, but the Friedman stuff is the ticket. If I could afford a Marsha I would not hesitate. My Friedman Marshall can roar or play at bedroom levels, still maintaining great tone. I never was able to do that with any other amp. If you like the modded Marshall sound, Friedman is one of the best, but remember at this level it is truly personal taste, they are all pro quality.

Actually it's not that big of a deal for me. The New Nevermore CD has me gassing for an ultra high gainer and Engls go for pretty good prices used. I miss my old Powerball sometimes. Hell I miss most of the amps I used to own, especially the SLO, XTC101b and Mk IV.

The new Nevermore CD is 5150, by the way. Andy Sneap can use or own any amp in the world and there's a reason he keeps coming back to his Peaveys for modern metal...

On that note, mine is still in the classifieds ;)

Just realized that after i got done playing it tonight.

As far as Fortin versus Friedman versus Cameron....everyone has their own taste and these 3 style amps all kill. I have 3 in my basement right now and I'm telling you, i could be happy with any of them. Yes, there are differences, the Cali has a boatload of gain and grind but also pretty tweakable. The Friedman has this really sweet thick organic tone that is really addictive to play on. The Cameron is a really pissed off sounding Marshall. So, you can't go wrong with any of them. Just see which one has the price, availability, options, etc. One of these amps doesn't "own" the others, they're all great.

Do you find the Marsha covering enough new ground for someone to justify buying on top of a 20th XTC?

Brad congratulations,

Have you ever tried a PT-100 or 20th Anniversary XTC? How do you like those amps?

Does the Marsha sound good at low volumes, as say a Diezel does?

Thanks!

I'm not Brad, but I've played all those amps -- and I have a Marsha on the way. All those amps are outstanding; comparing them, IMO, is akin to comparing apples and oranges and whatever your other favorite fruit is. I currently also have a Bogner Uber and I'm going to get either a 20th XTC or Fish as well.

And the Marsha slays at low volumes. SLAYS I say!

Agreed and you, me, and Dave were talking the same thing at one of the ampfests that we would be happy with any one of those amps but they are different enough to pick one that you like best.

Just got this amp back from Dave recently. He added second footswitchable master volume and gain knobs for the dirty channel...essentially makes this thing a 3 channel amp. This is easily the best sounding "Marshall" that I've ever come across...simply an amazing amp that's inspiring to play through. I have it matched up to a CAA 2x12 w/M75 Scumbacks...what a kick ass combo.

Doesn't surprise me at all. I have a Naked, Friedman makes a serious amp. So SO SO awesome. Congrats Brad.
