I got sued by metallica over the napster thing. Received an attorney's letter and everything. At the end I had to submit a copy of my hard drive to show there were no metallica songs on it and the lawsuit was dropped.

Imagine being a broke 20-something year old and getting sued by the biggest band on the planet. Can anything be more metal than that?

The sad part is I owned all their albums up til then. I only downloaded their songs because it was easier to do that than rip the wav files from the CD and convert to mp3.

I just listened to Van Halen 1 with good headphones, and I don't think Eddie's tone was better than Randy Rhoads' at the time. People always crap on Randy's tone, but Eddie's really wasn't any better to my ears.

The shidd pant toan just sounds like a cranked stock plexi to me I didn't really get why it's so desirable until I saw other people try to get an EVH tone and then it made sense.

The thing is, like all cranked vintage amps, half of getting that sound is playing with really solid technique, and the reason it's so difficult for people to cop that tone is because they don't have very good technique.

It's a great tone (just like all cranked plexis sound good) but it's a wildly overrated tone, in which a lot of the nuances are the console, room, and tape it was recorded onto - and therefore not really "getable" from just an amp in the room.

So what ends up happening is everyone who has a baseline of solid technique ends up thinking it's a good/great/whatever tone but there isn't much mystery to it, and everyone who sucks at guitar says "NO ACKSHUALLY IT WAS A SECRET DIODEZ MAN" or whatever the hell amp chaser goes on about in every thread.

It sounds a bit hollow and boxy, and his lead tone sounds harsh. I wonder though it the things I'm hearing had more to do with post production than the actual tone.

It sounds hollow and boxy compared to modern tones but you have to think about it in the context it was recorded

It was the first record millions of people heard with a "fully saturated" gained up guitar sound where the palm mutes stopped "plinking"

I was born in 1985 But I listen to a shitload of NWOBHM and am very familiar with what people were doing with gain tones in the time period VH1 came out. So I'm familiar with the context

And yeah, you're right, this is probably the only time you will see that

Dude, I've been listening to Sabbath since I was a snot nosed kid in the '70s. I hear no plink when he palm mutes the strings for the verse, just lots of chunk and balls. There's more clarity and upper mid kerrang since he's using a P90 vs EVH's humbucker with its sag in the lows from the comb filtering.

When I think plink I think country dudes and surf dudes doing fast muted runs on Tele, Strats, and Mosrites.

Also, lol at plink and kerrang.

Iommi is hugely influential no doubt, but that's a big, fuzzed out doom tone on the early records. People shit their pants about those Supergroup, orange etc tones for good reason; but they aren't modern like the EVH tone is.

It's just a different thing with different realms of influence

For me it is more just how big EVHs guitar sounds in the mix. Very well produced. Less interested in his actual tone.

I think EVH's playing is so superlative, people think that it was the guitar tone, whereas he just had God-like hands and fret mastery. If you put him through even a bedroom rig, EVH would destroy the place.

I actually like the tone on Blizzard, especially on Revelation. It's very midrangey to my ears though, but it sounds good with the band.

Also, plink. I never knew there was such a thing for that sound. Plink. From now on, I can sound interesting when someone talks about Sabbath.
