I'm not sure how you view it as out of whack.

A sheriff is the only constitutional law enforcement. Maybe I've missed something here but isn't that the reason that for the first 50 years of the USA as a country that was the only law enforcement?

I don't know the answer to that. I do know that police were something created long after the US constitution by municipalities, and were based mostly off of slave patrols, whereas sheriff's were established before the US was even a nation, and they have roots back to ancient times. I have watched several sheriffs get held accountable for shitty work and even recently watched one no good deputy fail to win the position. He was a democrat and should've been the shoe in here but his rep was so corrupt none of the students would vote for him lol.

Maybe southern police agencies were formed from slave patrols, but there are plenty of police departments that were created in non-slave states prior to the Civil War and the abolishment of slavery.
You do know that when a police officer is sworn in, part of the oath is to uphold the Constitution of the United States, right?

I think I implied the same thing. Well, I meant to. Plus the people that buy them are, hmm, how to say this...."different".

I do LOVE renting them though. When I was visiting my grandson I explained what "goes like stink" meant by demonstrating accelerating to freeway speed on a merge ramp. I was taking him to his guitar lesson at School Of Rock.

He cracked his first "damn, cars are cool" smile.
