Used gear prices

2020 is a dumpster fire, that includes used gear prices.

Prices are crazy. Total sellers market, if you have anything you’re looking to offload now is the time.

Yes, yes it is! I think many of us have the bucket list of gear and we’re fulfilling it!

I’ve been listing gear and making money. Lately the stuff is selling so fast if it doesn’t sell within hours I start to wonder what the hell is going on? At least twice, maybe even more that I don’t know of, someone was trying to negotiate a lower price on something and another person came in and actually bought it for the buy it now price so I didn’t even have to respond and counter offer. I almost put a funny thread in to show you guys how fast I can sell gear, but do you guys would flame ? on me.

i thought for sure prices would be going down during all this bullshit but i was wrong. i did find a couple pretty killer deals locally so i cant bitch, but some amps ive been eyeing for a while like a fender prosonic went from $7-800 are going for $1200+ now  peavey XXX's that were $4-500 for years are now $8-900

I'm trying to understand the psychology of whats going on.... so is it the covid/lockdown keeping people at home in their studios and man caves and the production of new gear being down, leading to this craziness then? this is def a bubble

It’s definitely a combination of new gear being more scarce due to build/manufacturing/parts/supply issues and people having more cash because everything was shut down / still shut down (no sporting events, no concerts, less traveling/getaways) and the same people having more time to focus on stuff at home. Interestingly enough sales on gear forums for me have been slow but sales on Craigslist / Facebook marketplace / reverb have been similar to Markedman’s experience

This is only true for lower dollar gear. Anything in the 2K -5K range is not selling. If you want to sell it you have to give it away.

the stuff i got deals on were cover band guys offing gear due to no gigs.

this is what i'm seeing too.... GC used has ramped up the prices of marshall and fender etc... you could get a prosonic for 500 bucks, a tonemaster (custom shop) for 999, a reissue plexi or 2203x for 1100.... no more, everything is inflated now.

Used prices are ridiculous. People think they're holding on to precious items.

As far as Reverb goes, people hiked up their prices to cover fees. They're basically getting 7.5%, (5% of sale, 2.5% processing). People are crazy with the shipping to make up for it. Saw a lot asking $150+ to ship a guitar.

Most of us still have our jobs but we're not buying concert or sporting event tickets. We're not eating out at restaurants or going on vacation.

Fender has already sold more guitars this year than any other year in it's history.

If it makes you feel better, I haven't been able to sell anything.

This plus the stimulus checks gave everyone more disposable income. Some new items were also in very low supply. A couple months ago a Fryette PS-100 was hard to find and if you did people were asking insane prices.

I would expect things to revert back at some point. But when?

GC jumped their used Marshall prices before Covid. At least 6 months before. I’d been looking for a stock vintage NMV Marshall, found one for 1500 (Canadian with the lay down pt) and waited too long to pull the trigger..a week later they moved the price to 2200.
Last yr I bought a NOS condition 09 USA Candy Tangerine SoCal for 799, still had plastic on the pickguard...2 weeks ago I bought a mint 08 Candy Blue SD for 1100. Not a mark on it, I don’t mind paying that but that’s an 800 dollar guitar last year.
Found a 72 Marshall cab for 1600 with matching Pulsonics; jumped on it since the only other cab out there similar was 3K or more, in worse shape.
I’ve had 2 offers for my Coliseum for over 5K...out of nowhere.
People are feeling like it’s time to buy something they’ve always wanted; like it’s the end of the world. Vintage Marshalls start around 1600 on up.....I paid 2200 for my 72 SuperTrem...considering the similar amps are going for 3K on up(and those have holes drilled in the chassis) I got a deal.
GC has a 72 Superlead for 6500 right now.
Lol

This is my experience as well. I have seen a big slow down on amp repair in the recent month. The lack of gigs is really putting a damper on that. It had picked up big time when stuff opened up.

Not that long ago a member local to me said the local techs wouldn't take his amp (or quoted a very long wait). So I knew amp repair had spiked but did not know it had already come back to reality.

I don't think vintage gear justifies the price anymore with builders like ceriatone offering classic designs with small tweaks that people pay hundreds for after the fact. Spend a few hundred on NOS mustards if that is your jam and upgrade the iron and you still have money in your pocket.

Speaking of gear prices and selling/buying, is Reverb the best/safest for buying selling gear these days? Seems like they are gouging on the fees, but I haven't sold anything in quite a while and eBay was what I used last.

Reverb is a good sevice but I suspect they are gouging on the fees because people are making up for it with stupid prices for shipping on small items like pedals. I also find that you have to sift through the prices some because a lot of ridiculous asking prices on there too. Ebay tends to have better deals still from what I have seen.
