v30s, Greenbacks, or both?

Hi, I have an original '87 Marshall 2555 Jubilee that I have paired with a Marshall 4x12 with Celestion v30s. They sound great together, and I like the added upper mids the v30's have going on. I recently picked up a Friedman modified Marshall JMP which is awesome, and I've been running that into the same Marshall cab I mentioned above. I have been curious if picking up a cab with greenbacks G12M 75hz would be cool, or maybe picking up a Friedman cab where the greenbacks and v30s are paired together. Anyone have an opinion on this? Would greenbacks add to the tones, or just stick with v30s?
Again I am happy with the marshall v30 cab, just curious if greenbacks would bring out something extra with the Friedman JMP.

I had a killer ‘80 Friedman JMP, and the cabs that amp liked best were my Greenback loaded Splawn and an old G12-65 loaded Marshall. Silver Jubilees are known to love V30’s, but besides them, I’d go in another direction.

I have Friedman cab, 1960B with Greenbacks, and a 1960A with V30's. The all Greenback cab sounds the best with everything Marshall to my ears. YMMV.

thanks, my friedman jmp is also a 1980, maybe its the same amp that end up here. mine has a c45, sat, jbe and metro loop.

yeah, jubilees sound best (imo) with v30's because of the upper mid spike, and with the friedman they are also killer but im just tempted to grab a 4x12 with greenbacks.

so question is, should i just grab another 4x12 with greenbacks, or swap 2 v30s for greenbacks in this marshall cab, and blend them like that friedman 4x12 cab does? im thinking leave well enough alone with the marshall 4x12 with v30s and just grab another cab with greenbacks.

If you have discernment and refined taste, older versions will appeal to you. There is no substitute for the genuine article.

That said, I built a cab out with 90's UK V30's and 2010 GB reissues, and it gets no play because my Mesa OS from 2003 is so much more musical.

Older speaker tech is flat better, ask @SBlue about that 70's cab with the Knock in Nashville. Buy nice or buy twice!

haha! yes!! thats my new amp. fedex destroyed it during shipping so the white headshell needs to be replaced.

This one? If so that amp is a KILLER. One of the few that I miss.

I have played through 1 GB/V-30 X-pattern 4x12 and thought blending those 2 speaker varieties brought out the best that each speaker brings to the table. The V-30s added some sizzle where a quad of Greenbacks can sound a little dark, and the GBs seemed to tame the upper midrange spike that V-30s are known for.

Marshall 1960A w/Celestion G12C12 & Vintage 30 speakers

I installed a pair of Celestion G12C-25 speakers (bought used and pulled from a Marshall Vintage Modern 4x12 cab) and a pair of used Vintage 30 speakers (one is U.K., the other is MIC) in a used Marshall JCM 900 1960A 4x12 cab that came with only 2 Celestion G12T-75 speakers installed in it. I like the midrange punch of the Vintage 30 speakers and the breakup of the G12C-25 speakers. I had it like that for a couple of years, but sold off the G12C-25 speakers to fund a guitar and added all Vintage 30 speakers in my 4x12 cab now since I run the 4x12 cab with custom wiring for wet/dry/wet in a single 4x12 cab.

Speakers/cabs are so variable. I had a 4x12 opened up three or four times today swapping around various V30 types.

Had '93 V30s from a Tremoverb in an X with '97 T75s. Those '93 V30s in an X with Marshall G12 Vintage speakers. And those T75s with the G12Vs or a MiC V30.

Each of the V30 types sounds a bit different. The '93 has sorta of a syrupy thickness to it. The others are brighter. The G12V seems brighter than the MiC V30 yet the MiC V30 had a rather unpleasant piercing high end at loud volumes.

Maybe they just haven't been broken in the same amount? Either way, makes it very frustrating to sort out speakers and cabs when they all sound different.

Ended up with the same speaker combination that I started the day with ('93 V30s in an X with the T75s), so all a bit of a waste of time.

It’s because the Mesa V30’s are the original formula and as early as 93 Celestion had changed it for the worse.

this ^^^^

I always end up in this place, too. After awhile I think f it, there are more important things to do.

Huh. I had a Recto cab with V30s from '94 that had this really unpleasant top end. Not sure what was going on with that cab. Best Mesa cab I had was a much more recent one.
