I prefer the same speaker in all cabinets. I ran an X pattern of V30s and splawn small blocks and honestly it was too modern sounding for my preferences.
Was it broken in?Huh. I had a Recto cab with V30s from '94 that had this really unpleasant top end. Not sure what was going on with that cab. Best Mesa cab I had was a much more recent one.
I assume since it was so old but maybe not. Now that I can easily hook my "amp" (Axe FX) to a phone/computer, I should start hitting any cab with a burn in track to make sure, I guess. Was it broken in?
Abso-fucking-lutely!I assume since it was so old but maybe not. Now that I can easily hook my "amp" (Axe FX) to a phone/computer, I should start hitting any cab with a burn in track to make sure, I guess.
Do you know how to solder? If not, watch some videos and practice on something else first. Swapping speakers is simple, just remove the ones you want to change out, and install and solder up the new ones the exact same way.the cab i have here is an older marshall 4x12 with older celestion v30s and it sounds great, i wish i knew how to swap out speakers myself so i could a/b here. anyone here know how to go about doing that? or i could take the lazy approach and just buy another cab with greenbacks already in there, lol. i like the greenback g12m 75.
i dont know how to solder, at least not yetDo you know how to solder? If not, watch some videos and practice on something else first. Swapping speakers is simple, just remove the ones you want to change out, and install and solder up the new ones the exact same way.
You can do it! It’s a great addition to skills and will allow you to understand your speakers, cab, amp, and guitar electronics on a deeper level. The joy of discovery is kind of a revelation when you begin to creatively comprehend how things relate to each other.i dont know how to solder, at least not yet![]()
thanks man!You can do it! It’s a great addition to skills and will allow you to understand your speakers, cab, amp, and guitar electronics on a deeper level. The joy of discovery is kind of a revelation when you begin to creatively comprehend how things relate to each other.
If you don’t want to solder, there’s no shame in using spade connectors to try different things. Have fun!
im going to have to pull off the back plate and see what the connection looks like, im all for easy and fast@Lespaul1981 At some point Marshall started using the crimp connectors, and those you just push on/pull off the speaker tabs. It does make it very fast to change speakers.
Hi, I have an original '87 Marshall 2555 Jubilee that I have paired with a Marshall 4x12 with Celestion v30s. They sound great together, and I like the added upper mids the v30's have going on. I recently picked up a Friedman modified Marshall JMP which is awesome, and I've been running that into the same Marshall cab I mentioned above. I have been curious if picking up a cab with greenbacks G12M 75hz would be cool, or maybe picking up a Friedman cab where the greenbacks and v30s are paired together. Anyone have an opinion on this? Would greenbacks add to the tones, or just stick with v30s?
Again I am happy with the marshall v30 cab, just curious if greenbacks would bring out something extra with the Friedman JMP.
dude! this^^@Lespaul1981 At some point Marshall started using the crimp connectors, and those you just push on/pull off the speaker tabs. It does make it very fast to change speakers.
Also if it’s a Marshall cab, it will have two parallel pairs in series at the jack. You can rewire it to be two series pairs in parallel at the jack, with the GB’s in series and V30’s in series, which will make essentially a 32 ohm v30 2x12 plus 32 ohm GB 2x12 in parallel at 16 ohms in one cab. That’s what sounds best to my ears, fwiw, and how Dave wires his beloved Friedman 4x12.dude! this^^
thank you, i found a pair of greenback g12m 75hz locally and swapped them out myself yesterday.
it was actually pretty easy and straightforward. so now my cab has 2 greenbacks on top and 2 v30's on the bottom. the results are cool, but moreso different than say better/worse. i like what the greenbacks add.
so, if anyone needs to 2 v30's that are the 2011 anniversary model, pm me. thanks!

wow, thank you. the cab is a 1960B so it has the back plate of 16ohm, 4 ohms mono and 8 stereo. would that matter? Also if it’s a Marshall cab, it will have two parallel pairs in series at the jack. Yes, it will be two parallel pairs in series mono (16), two parallel pairs stereo (8), two parallel pairs in parallel mono (4).wow, thank you. the cab is a 1960B so it has the back plate of 16ohm, 4 ohms mono and 8 stereo. would that matter?
I have a speaker burn-in track going right now; some sort of pulsating pink noise thing. Sounds like space aliens are invading my basement haha.Abso-fucking-lutely!
Get a strong power amp, couple of hundred watts. Put the cab face down in carpet, be sure the speaker isn't hitting it under load. Put a cycle of Deadmau5 (any EDM with hard bass and good compression) and something like Meshuggah (guitar mids/highs and all) through it and run it for 50+ hours total. You will be AMAZED at how break-in changes things.
