DLR was and is an entertainer, his live voice was always hit or miss, a great showman though. Till this day... I am amazed how well EVH could play absolutely shitfaced drunk. Sammy Hagar said the same thing, he could never keep up with the Ed and Alex's drinking and eventually had to back off.
Ed's Diver Down tone here was so clean with not much gain. If you notice towards the end of the show his tone gets grittier and more distorted so with he switched main amps through the show or something was on it's way out.
If you like this show you really need to see Largo 82 show, audio is absolutely kick ass. Same thing here....Ed's tone is very clean clear cranked SL tone, it's all Ed's fingers, franky, marshall broken coil humbucker P/U here IMO.
There are always VH threads regurgitating the same old shit over & over but for me DLR on his own was a far better musical proposition to my ears.
To me DLR out on his own could be the master showman he is plus he could actually pick or write songs that suited his style & voice.
Trying to sing over a lot of Eddie material would be a tough call for any vocalist no matter who you were.
VanHagar were a better song band without DLR plus DLR was a far more musical force with more appropriate songs for his voice. Plus the shackles were off him to do as he pleased.
Just a reminder of how good DLR was back then without the ball & chain of a band, family named Van Halen.
