Sounds killer! I sure wouldn't mind having an amp with that tone in the stable.

How about the Reeve's Super '78? It's purpose-built to get that tone (not modded), rock-solid and built like a tank. Plus, it's an off-the-shelf amp that comes with a return policy. I love the tone of some of the Bray amps as well...

Friedman
Cameron
Fortin
Bray
Metro

ALL amazing stuff.... Rockstah's clips have by far been the most convincing, and consistent to my ears-- at getting that tone.

I heard that tone a few years back on the HRI forum when rockstah was posting them. Closest I have ever heard next to the real thing!

No doubt that Mark has that tone nailed cold. There was a 50 watter with his Mod5 up for sale here at rig-talk a few months ago....$1100.

This Peters clip is pretty close IMO. If it had more effects on it, it'd sound pretty close to that plexi clip.

I have one! It's a 1971 Marshall that I sent to him for the Mod 5. HIS clips sound amazing! My playing - not so much. There is a huge amount of HIS playing that goes into the sound of the amps. I never believed it until I had a buddy over who was really, really good and had the VH thing nailed. He plugged into my Martin Golub SLP, put the trble down a hair from where I had it, and BAM! instant Brown Sound. I was floored. In the right hands Mark's amps are unbelievable. In my hands they sound really good, but I am still missing something to get it "there". The only difference is I know it is ME who is missing something and can not blame the amp...

By the way, Mark was great to deal with. The amp mod did take longer than originally promised (about 2-3 months over). This was not my main amp and was a fun project, so I only bugged him weekly...

By the way if anyone is interested I may be willing to sell it as I am going through a divorce and may need the cash...

Hey!

The guy that made that clip should have learned the song a little better.

You telling me with all that crap load of gear you have(and your hands :D ) you can't get THAT tone?

No matter how much guys want you to believe it's all in the hands... The gear matters, and no-- not all Marshalls sound like that. ;)

No doubt, a great sounding amp, but too much gain, low end and more modern sounding ...

The clip off the amp I posted just does it in spades.

I'll put it here, for a direct comparison:

all that verb though

1959 or RI, or any equivalent, lower the filtering in the PI, add PPIMV, cascade front end like a 2203, maybe an extra bypass cap depending on the amp done. .. add tones of verb, bitchen clip

not to mention mark is a killer player. Ive heard two guys who had the mod done say it doesnt sound like that in person. They might not have had the chops, and they might not have that reverb.

Yeah look at the plethora of baby boomers chasing Clapton's 45 year old Cream/Bluesbreakers tone.

And...

Hendrix
SRV
Trower
Robben Ford
Holdsworth
Page
Knopfler
Gibbons
Angus
Malcolm
Gilmour
Landau
Lukather
Lynch
Metallica
Santana
The Edge
Andy Summers
Eric Johnson
etc... etc...

I think one interesting thing is that most of these guys with the exception of maybe metallica/the edge etc. could pretty much get "their tone" with an old fender or marshall and a pedal or two. I think the clip Zach posted sounds like a great VH tone no doubt but I also agree that is coming to a large extent from the player. Obviously not every Marshall has that "tone" but one thing in common with all those guys on that list is they have a very identifiable style/touch that transcends their gear. A lot of them even use very similar setups but are instantly identifiable anyways. It's always interesting to me how different people really sound playing through my rig for example even with the same settings and guitar.

What a lot of guys probably don't realize is that Mark is also re-amping the amps he mods and cranks them up pretty good for those clips. I do the same thing w/ the Big w/d/w rig, so feel fairly comfortable that I can get appealing results.

I have actually been looking at various Marshall Plexi style amps, thinking I could get one for cheap and send it to you for this mod, but when I found out this actual amp was available-- I thought hmmmm it's priced fairly accessible, and I know it can get what I want done-- done.

100% agree. When I had a Mojave Peacemaker, I got that tone is spades-- but did have to adjust my touch of the guitar and get used to pulling that sound out, but once I did-- it was a glorious thing.

This is true. It's not all in the hands by any means. Both the technique/touch in the hands and the gear play a part. Zach, also agree that the Peters doesn't nail the brown sound like your clip, just posted it 'cause I thought it was pretty cool for an amp that most people get metal tones with.
