As many of you have seen, one of EVH's guitar as used in the Hot for Teacher video is up for sale and expected to fetch $2 - $3M

Used in the song's iconic music video – and extensively by EVH in 1983 and 1984 – the guitar is projected by Sotheby's to sell for between 2 and 3 million dollars. The custom-made Kramer electric guitar that Eddie Van Halen used in the iconic music video for Van Halen's Hot for Teacher is going up for auction.

Put up for sale by Sotheby's, the guitar has an eye-watering minimum bid of $1,800,000, and is valued overall at between 2 and 3 million dollars. If the guitar does end up selling for anywhere within that range, it would easily become one of the 10 most expensive guitars ever sold at auction.

You can see it in action in the Hot for Teacher video below.

The guitar in question, Kramer CO176, was built by Kramer luthier Paul Unkert, and – according to Sotheby's(opens in new tab) – served as one of Eddie Van Halen's primary guitars in 1983 and 1984, until he switched to a similar model made from basswood.
The six-string features a 22-fret, bolt-on maple neck with an "Unk" stamp on the heel, a single double-coil Seymour Duncan humbucker pickup and, naturally, one volume knob and a Floyd Rose bridge with a whammy bar. The Kramer is also notable in that it's the first of Eddie's guitars – to feature screw holes on the back of the body for connecting his patented support system for playing the guitar piano-style.

According to Sotheby's, the Kramer was gifted by Eddie Van Halen to the band's retiring drum tech, Gregg Emerson, around 1990. Emerson subsequently gave the guitar to his nephew, who sold the guitar to Neal's Music in Huntington Beach, California. Neal's Music then sold the instrument to its current owner. The guitar comes with a letter of provenance by Paul Unkert, a signed photograph from Eddie Van Halen, its original case with tour and Warner Brothers tags, and the straight jacket and white gloves worn by Van Halen in the video. Bidding for the instrument closes next Tuesday, April 18.

True meaning of the sale was that it was the closest guitar to Ed to be considered important within the original Roth era collection. This wasn’t just a “video” familiar guitar. The importance of the guitar was that it was within the first UNK original collection effort builds for Ed before the ‘84 tour 8 Kramer backups were built. Ed used this guitar as well from ‘84-‘86, but it was not a main, as the 5150 and 1984 were mostly mains. However there are many photos of this Hot For Teacher guitar with Ed playing it live. A guitar’s value is who made it, when, and if the artist played it with any historical importance. All these categories fit the bill regardless of condition. Broken Hendrix and Cobain guitars sold at top dollar. Also, to note of today’s high sale, is of Wolf’s statement that the remaining original Roth era guitars would never be made available for sale. So for now, today’s sale is the closest a sale would ever get to the real core Roth era EVH Guitars. The two or three auctioned Ed guitars in the past 2yrs were not considered important to Ed’s career as they were basically generally just Kramer made models for gifts. Also it’s a great price since the guitar was not in Ed’s hands for years. It was a gift to his drum tech, who handed it down to a family member who basically hocked it at a general guitar store who then sold it to a collector. Opinions on the condition of the guitar was that it gained wear over the years once out of Ed’s hands. So for it to be sold at $3.9Mill is still incredible. Meaning If Ed’s Frank was ever auctioned, it would fetch well over the $6MILL Cobain guitar.
