Hello there Rig-Talk!

I'm going to give the Axe FX one last shot playing out...this time with a dedicated tube power amp...SS sounded awesome, but I couldn't get it to cut through the mix/loud enough with my drummer, FRFR really didn't do it for me, and running it through the return of my Mark IV was pretty cool.....not very practical though, and though the tubes helped, I felt like there was a lot of unnecessary coloring going on with this method.

So, how do these two power amps compare? I've always ran 100W amps in the past, which inclines me towards the 2/90/2...never really dealt with 50 watters...I play high gain metal/hard rock with a HARD hitting drummer.

Appreciate your input!

Eric

I've heard of loads of people using VHT power amps and heard nothing bad in the slightest.

One of the main problems I had in the beginning with the Axe-fx was volume issues but I realized that the problem was in my patches. Check your amp block settings and make sure the volume is on or close to Zero DB. if its not then you aren't getting the full volume hitting your poweramp. If you don't correct that issue, it wont make a difference if you use tube or solid state, you'll still have the problem. Hope this helps!

I wouldn't think of the 2/50/2 as a 50 watt personally - it's an absolute beast! It's obscenely loud and will give you some nice power amp colouration at much lower volume than the 2/90/2.
I use a 2/50/2 and I couldn't be happier, while my friend who has a 2/90/2 wishes he had got the same

Totally agree with this.

I found FRFR to be the best way to go. Takes a bit of getting used to since you are hearing a "finished" tone rather than a raw tone, but I never had a problem hearing myself with a FBT Verve 12ma pointed at my head.

That said, I just shipped my rig today to its new owner. I loved the sound and consistancy but I missed being able to make quick tweaks on the fly during gigs. That and I was only using it to about 5% of its capabilities. I know I'll miss it, especially for recording, but I wanted to try something else. I could be back in the fold soon though.

Thanks for the input so far...anyone else care to share?

I absolutely love my 2/50/2 :) Never tried it with an AxeFX though

I have a 2/90/2 I run with my Axefx and couldnt be happier, I just love the fullness of KT88's

I tried mine with a 2/50/2 and a Mesa 2:100....I preferred the Mesa :) The VHT was no slouch though. I found the Mesa to be meaner...I like mean :)
