VHT PBUL Or Engl E570/VHTPower Amp?

ISP makes a small guitar sub (2x10 400 watt). I wish more of you guys could try them out. I have one, along with two of the 15" 600 watt vectors. Not one of my amps sound thin or lack bottom end. I know it's hard to justify the price for just a simple powered speaker box, but if you are spending big bux for your amps and cabs it seems like a no brainier to me.
These are prob awesome for jamming alone but i gear my sound toward the mix and wind up filtering off that sub bass anyway which also allows the amplifier to be more efficient.

Hi marty.!

I had one of the ISP powered subs ran with my Engl Savage 5 or 6 years ago. Really cool idea. Loved the punch it gave. Didn't jive with how it split the low end to come through the just the sub and the rest of the frequencies through the cab.

So question is. If I go for the Engl pre and a VHT OR Mesa power amp, will I get destroyed by Pittbull or 5150?
I saw Death Angel a couple years ago and I think the lead guy had a e570 with I don't know what power amp and he got destroyed by the other dude's Mark V.

EQ settings and the sound guy can cause any amp to be buried. I went to a local show a couple months ago where a 5150 was buried in the mix by a Recto.

The freq separation sounded weird huh?

I don't play in a band at the moment and would just want it for house jamming/recording.

Going to see Death Angel open for Slayer Thursday; can't wait

I've actually had the Engl side of it. I like the VHT stuff but the dryness of it just feels stiff in a way I didn't like-no disrespect to anyone who loves it bc I totally appreciated it as a rhythm amp and I had no issues playing on it. And before anyone says it's because it's unforgiving...I've practiced for years with a crappy metal zone or some other pedal plugged straight into a board through headphones bc I WANTED something that wouldn't forgive while practicing. But not when trying to flow.

I originally was going for a rack setup after using Mesas for about a decade. Still LOVE their mid-range footprint in a mix but i was looking for something more modern. I originally bought a Triaxis which was cool but in NO way in league with the Mesa heads I had sitting in the room next to it and the 2:90 it was connected to. Cool for the versatility but none of the sounds were as good as the couple of sounds I could get out of the heads. I bought a Mesa Quad, which kicked SO much ass but again, it just felt like it sat on top of the power amp instead of becoming a part of it. And I still GAS over those, thinking I made a mistake there. The crunch of the Mark 3 channel was actually closer to VH's "brown" sound than any amp I've ever played, strangely enough.

So I bought a SE570 preamp. Phenomenal. it didn't pair well with the mesa 2:90 I thought so I bought a VHT 2:50:2 power amp because i wanted that VHT quickness to complement the Engl. Best choice for that preamp by far, I believe. Stellar. But I didn't want to drag around a rack so I bought first, an Invader100, which I thought killed the rack setup on channel 3 but nothing else, then bought a SE670 EL34, which I liked better than the 570/VHT rack combo. It wasn't that it sounded so much better. It just sounded more integrated, if that makes sense. And the 670 had SO much more going for it. 5 channels, 3 effects loops, you could bias it yourself and switch between different output tubes (6L6, EL34, etc) yourself with hot or cold biasing effortlessly... Killer amp

I concur. I posted the same findings in this thread about 10 posts up. The SE head sounds better and simply flows better than even the Engl SE570 + matching Engl E850 power amp.

OP: If you're more concerned about tone instead of flexibility... Which it seems from your posts that you are... Just get the SE670 head and go play guitar!

Done.

A-men, brother! :D

Richardt4520, I have been thru the exact thing. I had a bunch of rack pre and power amps for several years. I also found that several sets didn't work as well together, and when I went back to just a straight amp head I was way happier.

True! Why is that, man? haha It seems like it should be the same but something is just not there with a rack system. The tone can be there but it just doesn't have that THING that an amp has. Maybe some of the technical guys here get why that is but it's beyond my limited knowledge for sure!

I remember a thread where some amp builders talked about why it's like that. Betting James peters knows why.

It's not like the preamp/power amp rack thing sucked. It was great. I have just found the amp head thing better for me.

when the preamp and poweramp are tied to the same supply the preamp voltages sag in uison with the high current demands of the poweramp. i think ive seen at least one design that had a connection between components for this. that is the difference.

-the voicing of the pre-amp will dictate your tone more so than any power amp choice, as far as the ENGL's go-(or any amp for that matter)-the simpler they are, the better they sound, its the good at everything, great at nothing theory, I agree with the 100w FIREBALL being your best choice, I did the cross over and sub set up for awhile, its very effective, but I found you lose something in the process, seemed to lack dynamics..

-go with the core tone you like best-(guitar,cord,amp,speaker)-then tweak it from there. If you have a ton of real estate dedicated to a pedal board, then that's your "core tone"..... FACT!!
