Posting as I listen.........

1....sounds loose to me, lots of low mids working

2.....better than 1, tad tighter and the low mids are not as pronounced.

3.....Not feeling this one, real loose imo.

4.....more powerful and in your face sounding, rounder.

The second round I was digging 2 and 4 with 3 being my least fav.

4-2-1-3 for me :) Nice playing Chub and thanks for the work!

Curt, do you have any cool les pauls in at your shop right now? I'm selling my Charvel and I'm going to have some cash to burn.

Tyler

Tyler,
Man, I am the wrong guy to ask about "cool" Les Pauls. I love the look of a honeyburst flametop standard with zebras in it, but I just am not comfortable on those things. Plus I think that exceptional sounding Les Pauls are few and far between. I know I am in the minority here, and they sound killer in other peoples hands, but Les Pauls just don't feel or sound the way I like.

I have a few Les Pauls in stock, but none of them are special in my opinion. Even that Norum owned Les Paul that Mark Cameron himself chimed in on this thread didn't strike me as particularly amazing. Very good sounding? Maybe... I guess. It sounded killer in Norums hands though.

Just to be sure, did you leave the mic in the same place and do this all at once?

It's funny, right after I posted about that Norum goldtop, I gave Mark a call and he had already seen it and was telling me all about it! I used to be way more into superstrats but I've been really into Les Pauls lately. They do play completely different than superstrats but after I got used to the feel it wasn't a big deal.

I tend to dig in pretty hard when I play and that usually yields a "thump" out of a les paul that I can't seem to get out of a strat-style guitar.

If you get any cool pauls (well, ones that other people think are cool at least) let me know and I'd love to give you some business.

Everything was exactly the same. I didn't even re-tune.

Man, if I dig in AT ALL on a Les Paul it goes out of tune. Hell, if I look at a Gibson it goes out of tune. Plus if I palm mute hard on a Les Paul, with the shorter scale length, I find that the pressure of my palm is making the notes sharp.

It's not that I grew up on super strats so I could never get used to a Les Paul. My first good guitar was a 1980 LP Custom bought brand new that I still have. That's what I grew up on. Three years later when I played my first Kramer, I thought, "gee, I can pull off everything much easier on this guitar that I've never played before than on the guitar I play for hours everyday and have been playing for years now". I immediately started saving for a Kramer. When I almost had enough to buy the Kramer, I played my first ever San Dimas Charvel new. This was like everything great about the Kramer but 50% better. I had to keep saving for alot longer after playing that Charvel.

So yeah, I've owned my main LP for 27 years now. It still feels foreign to me.

Yeah, a lot of LP's are complete shit but every now and again I'll find one I fall in love with. I go back and forth but I definitely love the sound of a good les paul.

What type of charvel did you get in trade for the goldtop?

One that I immediately sold for $1250. A pointy, single hum, added Floyd and birdseye maple neck. Played amazing, but way too bright for me.

Hey what's the difference between all these Super Leads?

Keep 2 and 4 and throw away 1 and 3 (those are horrid).

Thanks for listening guys. I want a modern, hi gain amp and one of these amps has to go.
See there that makes my opinion mute. I'm not a modern tone guy. :)

But in depth I think...

1 - sounded the most natural, nice tone
2 - sounds really good as well...not quite as good as 1
4 - something seemed disconnected about the bass frequencies...sounded like something was missing in between, bit of a grain I didn't dig
3 - sounds smeared, I don't know if you are using the Hotplate on this one but it didn't sound right to me

Man I have always had the same experiences with LP's. You are not alone. I really want to like them too, just have never felt comfortable on them. What I do have that is LPish is a stop tail Wolfgang that I just love. I know it's not the same scale as an LP but the thing does sound huge. Like it has a third testicle compared to my Axis SS which has always killed alot of my buddies guitars in comparison.

I bet if you put an LP and a Wolfgang with same pups in both; alot of people would be surprised. The bridge is sunk-in to the body and this is what makes it feel alot more comfortable than an LP. I was completely surprised by it. Best guitar I played in a day of visiting music stores here in Toronto a while back and I got it used for under grand in great shape.

Sorry for hijacking this thread, not my intention just thought I'd share about my LP expereince. Great sounding clips for sure and great avatar! 8)

I think clip #1 and #4 sound really good to me as different as they are. The others still sound pretty good to me too :? Good luck.

Crud, I didn't get a chance to listen at home last night and I certainly don't want to use these dung speakers for comparing tones... I'm going to listen anyway, but may not give an opinion due to a poo audio system.

I like #2 because the highs were rolled off compared to #1
I would like #1 the best for recording because it would sit in the mix better but I would prefer to use #2 Live

#3 I did not like at all

#4 has something weird going on in the bass...It's almost like a sub overtone in the recording. There is definitely a low end rumble I am hearing in the recording.
