Wait a Minute... What About The Friedman JJ?

Been messing around on the Slax....

Ch.1 is outrageously awesome - I love love love the bite that it has. It's not Fender/Vox clean, it's not piano-like or rounded and smooth like so many other amps (and, c'mon, the purpose of "Clean" is to actually be "Clean" but as I've joked so many times before, who really gets an amp like this for strictly cleans, whatever, up for debate....). But that little bit of grit that the Clean offers is outrageously tasty. And yes, goes to Marshall'esque territory with the gain past 2pm, but it's different from a Marshall, or Marshall type tone in that it's not "dry". It's really grainy and sweet and has a bit of that Bogner "juiciness" to it. Can't really describe - you really gotta sit down in front of one and give 'er to know.

Ch.2 is awesome. Fucking love this channel. And what I love about it is IT DOESN'T HAVE TO DO METAL ONLY (in fact, the whole amp "doesn't have to do metal although it will crush when it does!!), it's a super inspirational channel. SO CLEAR. So the gain's all over the map with my playing along with Mids, Thump, Global Presence - the notes just ring and ring and ring with sustain, and you can hear all notes beautifully well - no matter how much of a soup you're holding chord-wise in your hand. Jaaaaayzeus!!! What a hoot!!!!!!!!!!

Ch.3 - wow. Okay. I've only ever used the term "nuclear" on 2 other amps. The Purple Mod TJ, and the Rev.2 (when it's dialled *just* right). Ch.3 on the Slax is absolutely nuclear!!!!! But - BUT!!!!!!!!! - it doesn't lose focus, clarity, girth, breadth, detail, or note articulation - still - even on this high-gain channel - it doesn't muddy up. I've had this thing at about 11-11:30am on the MV, and it's obscenely loud (my guess is the PTs start to kick into squish mode around 2pm which doesn't add to more volume, just different sensitivity...the 100W headroom is there at noon on the dial for sure, after that it's likely tubes getting pushed, tone getting more rich, less stiffness even though it's not "stiff" per se, things changing, but I can't destroy this house, just saying....it's fkn loud!!). Sustain is incredible. It's a brighter amp but not shrill (also highly sensitive to a variety of guitars and pickup types too!!). Not glassy and not glaring. The JJ is a darker amp - and seems similar but has a totally different flavour - kinda like the Slax is "Hot and Sour" Chinese soup, extra spicy at that; the JJ is "Chicken Udon Noodle Soup", extra spicy. Christ I'm at a loss for words here. But ya, it's a highly HIGHLY functional amp that doesn't just rest "squarely" on the point of chugga-chugga-broot-broot!! It has character, style, sophistication, breadth, really DELICIOUS tones throughout, it's not a JJ100, it's not meant to be a JJ100, it's the Slax...

Holy FKN wow, Folks!!!!!!!

More playing this weekend - but in the meantime - holy FKN wow!!!!!!

I know you are trying "not to say"... but it sounds to me like the SLAX is the new #1.

I wonder if Bogner and Friedman are reverse-engineering each others amps, to compare what
each house is cooking-up!
Is it safe to say.... these two amp makers are the TOP DOGS in the market right now?

Well put man. I really like that all 3 channels bring something different to the plate... I really like that I can get off for hours on channel 3 without feeling I need a TS or some kind of overdrive in front for heavy stuff... I mean you can but it's really not needed. And agreed with the JJ being darker sounding. It's similar but to me the Slax has a very natural brightness to it while maintaining that low end.

Anyway grats Mo! Now go get some clips posted ;)

Thanks man, hey you live in Waikiki?? Let me know, I may be bombing over to Kauai and Oahu for a couple weeks on each island to catch some pre-winter north swell soon. Would love to meet another RT'er!!

LoL... Dude I don't even have space to keep all my gear in one room... it's scattered where ever I can fit shit   Married with 2 kids in a 2 bedroom condo. If I was in the mainland that would probably equate to 3 to 4 bedroom with yard and garage.

Was just messing with ya man, I've got ohana all over the islands I stay with - it's all good man - all pau!!

I would love to have a JJ if I could find a great used one at a decent price.

I won't pay Friedmans new prices. I'm sure they are worth it new but I just can't personally justify the new prices since I don't gig live that much anymore.

Neither one is the new "No.1", they're both spectacular in their design and what they offer.

And who am I to say who the "top dogs" are in the market right now? Tone preference is super personal and unique to each individual, so I'd never venture that far to say anything that would remotely infer [this]. Don't forget about Diezel - they're top-drawer and offer amazingly unique tone (if you're into their tone); Two-Rock, Cornford, Soldano, Wizard, sooooooooooooooooo many "booteek" amp makers out there that are just nutso amazing. So - we're blessed to have variety in this world of music - or is it a curse?? Back in the 60s and 70s (when real music was made en masse, ahem), you were either a Marshall, Vox or Fender cat. Period. Today?? Enough brands to make your head spin like Linda Blair in the Exorcist!!

I won't give any "this one over that one" for quite some time. But I will say they're both very exciting amps to play

Just wait till after xmas when everyone's out of cash or when tax season hits... There are going to be times where gear comes up for a good price! Everything goes through a fashion-phase... The real deal amps and gear always stick around

Thanks!! I hope to own a JJ one day. I really would love to own one if the right one comes along at a more reasonable price.

Dude, I'm thinking you need to get your hands on a Driftwood. They're so incredible. Lately though, I've been tempted to trade my Driftwood for a JJ only because I've been wanting a JJ for years and never could find the right deal on one. I think I'd be very happy finally getting a JJ, but I'd really regret letting go of my Purple Nightmare. Damn man, gear whoring is a hard business... So how's the Butterslax been? Is it lacking any versatility as far as clean and in-between? I know you CAN get the tones, but it doesn't seem like the Butterslax was really meant for any of that. What's the verdict?

Great amp, i ended up getting a JJ for $2300 used, a dude had it on reverb and i met him locally and bypassed the fees and shipping. So keep your eyes open, deals pop up once and a while.
I seen somebody else sell one for 2400.

I absolutely love the JJ and ive owned alot of nice amps over the years but this is one of my favs of all-time. Ive been playing it for the past 6 months now and it gets the most play time. Its also the amp my son goes to most of the time when he wants to jam with me.

Pleasure man, just do yourself a favour and try the amp before thinking about getting it. The VH4 and Slax couldn't be further apart even though both are well respected as "brootz style" heads. The only thing they have in common is that they deliver sledgehammer goodness in a "unique" way that sets them apart from the pack. Outside of the brootz, I love the hair and grit on Ch.1 with the Slax. Love it. VH4 is percussive piano cleans, Hagen is chimey cleans, etc etc etc. But the Slax is fun - and offers some great terrain.

I don't want to speak blasphemy here, but I unloaded a minty Rev.2 not that long ago... A real minty Rev.2 that was (like all the earlier models) just a little bit different than the others in its family. It was a tough decision, but I'd worked with preamps and bias changes and bottles and everything to get it to what it does "best" across a broader spectrum. I got it pretty dialled in - opened the bias up with a resistor swap to take 6550s, used a 5751 to open up headroom and knock down the fizz. It was a beast. But having the Slax? I don't even think about having sold my Rev.2 That's not to pit one against the other - just saying - we all have itches that need scratching - the itch that got scratched by my Rev.2 and TJ are now being well taken care of by the Slax and then some... WAY more range. But it is NOT a Rev.2 and does NOT give the same tone as a Rev.2 But the tone it DOES give is where (perhaps??) I was trying to GET my Rev.2, if that makes sense.

But, being that this is the JJ thread, that bad boy is just sublime - absolutely loving it. It stays!

Peace

I still have my rev blue uber, herbert, and mesa jp2c.
So i think a slax would be a nice additon to the family.

The JJ has impressed me so much, it really is a fine amp.
In the spring i played a JJ and be100 at gc and the JJ was my fav, there was some other friedmans like the runt which ive played a dozen times, and the dirty shirley, but none impressed my like the JJ, so i ended up getting one. I wouldnt mind trying the steve stevens someday, but slax is next on my list.
