I get ragged on a lot because of my love of Walter Beckers bass playing, and tasty riffs. Where does the hate come from? Was Steely Dan really hated that much in the late 70's/early 80's? I feel like he was a great songwriter.

Steely Dan are living legends, just look at the amount of musicians and songwriters that state them as inspiration. I don't know where you live, but I've never really come across any "hate" towards them.

Steely Dan is my favorite band & I've never really experience any hate towards Walter, especially for his playing.

His guitar playing is a little to un-Jazzy for SD imo, compared to the great players that have graced SD albums, but his bass playing is world class.

awesome players but i would rather cut my own throat than listen to steely dan.

Just my opinion

No hate in my view. Most guitarists on this site could likely
not hang with some of the technique needed to lay down
those solos on a number of those tunes, beyond the advanced chord knowledge
timing and rhythm. Not exactly droning away a pentatonic scale in the same boxes

Listen to the solo by Graydon in Peg and get back to me. Rumor is
many of the top session guys failed except him

If you don't like them different story, but most
don't like them because they don't have skill to deal with it, most consider
it a challenge to develop their skills and some very clever arrangements in those tunes. Lyrics
are pretty sleazy too when you decode them.

Well, we all love high gain here. But if you really love the instrument and what it can do in the right hands, respect is deserved among all great players..Larry Carlton comes to mind when I think of Steely Dan. Not familiar with Walter but Steely Dan have their place in history. I have some of the classics on my iPhone. I admit it. Not a country fan but I saw Vince Gill 20 yrs ago, he's an amazing player as well. If you're good, you're good and deserve respect IMO.

How about that time those nerds Fagen and Becker got roughed up by the Eagles? -
