WGS Question?

So I'm aiming for the sound of an X Pattern V30 and G12-K100. I emailed dave from WGS and he said the best pairing would be the British Leads and Retro 30. Does this sound right? I would have thought the british leads and the Veteran 30. Anyone a WGS user/fan that can give some input?
 
sounds right to me. Im currently using both the BL and the retro - not in the same cab though. But thats a very close comparison.
 
I had a BL80 and Ret30 in a 2x12 and the Retro completely swallowed the BL80. The Retro was louder and brighter.
I would definitely go with the Vet30 instead, because it's a bit less cutting and not as loud as the Retro. So it mixes better with trhe BL80.
I currently have Ret30's and Vet30's in an x pattern in one of my Marshalls. I recently sold off my two BL80's though.

What you want is K-100's. But WGS is suggesting BL80's, which is a Classic Lead 80 variant.
Classic Lead 80's do not sound like K-100's. The main thing they share in common is a high wattage handling. Not much else.

I suggest ordering two K-100's from Avatar, and a pair of either Retro 30's or Veteran 30's from WGS.
 
Thanks for the input!!! I was hoping to keep the funds w/ WGS because im not a fan of the Celestions being built in China. I think I'll try the 80's first and if it really isn't doing it for me maybe I'll bite the bullet and the get the k-100's. But I think I'll aim for the Vet30's instead of the retro.
 
The BL80 is very simular to a K100 IMO. A touch brighter maybe. But as far as the Vets vs the retros, the vets sound a touch dull by comparison IME. To me the retro is a better version of the Vet30
 
The BL80 is VERY dark and neutral sounding. Lot's of lows, low mids and zero highs. Very tight under pressure too.
The Vet30 is in fact dull in comparison to the Ret30. But that would be desirable if pairing it with the BL80. Since the Ret30 just dominates the BL80 with it's upper mids and stinging treble, cutting right over and through the BL80.

I haven't heard a K100 in person, but my impression is that it has a lot more character and high end bite than the BL80. Just my perception from afar though....

I love my Retro 30's, but I really only like them by themselves.
I've paired them with GT75's, ET65's, BL80's, Vet30's and Greenbacks. I liked them with the GB's best, but they really perform best on their own IMHO.
 
This is great input thanks so much. Im glad there are a number of peoploe who use the WGS. Im snagging a pair of BL80's and Im gonna give them a shot w/ the Ret30's. May be a couple weeks til I have the cash for the Ret's but once it's all together Ill do some clips.
 
wait...i'm so confused with WGS ......which one is the V30 clone??
 
The Vet30 and Ret30 aren't clones, they are more of variants of the Vin30.

The Vet30 has he upper mid spike shaved off.
The Ret30 has simmilar mids to a Vin30, but has more highs and deeper lows.
 
I didnt like the BL80 at all...I wouldnt pair it with anything. I like the Retro30 a lot though..... I would pair it with a Reaper. Infact I think it says on the website that the Reaper and Retro is a good match

I agree. The BL80 was one of the worst speakers I've ever used. I don't care for the Vet 30 that much either. I do love the Retro 30 And Reaper though....both paired and as standalones.
 
Whats the Reaper sound like? is there another speaker comparison?
 
The Reaper is supposed to be a variant if the G12H30, although I've never heard one in person. There is also the Reaper HP which a 50 watt version of the speaker.
So a Reaper and a Retro would be similar to a G12H30 and V30 mix, which is a quite popular pairing.
 
I like my BL80. Ive got one in an EVTL806 cab I built (theile-ish clone)
 
The thing with the BL80 is that you really got to put some serious volume through them. That's when the lows start thumping tightly and the mids get fat. You won't squeeze any treble out of them though. You have to make sure your amp has some nice high end cut and sizzle dialed in for that.
At any other volume though, they can be a one way ticket to dull city.
 
I have used the BL80's, ET65's, and the K100's. I liked the ET65's the best. The 80's were great for use with modelers due to their nuetral character and the K100's just didn't work for me. YMMV.
