Yeah, I was actually REALLY surprised when I first learned that. I mean I understand bulk purchasing, but damn...

I don’t know if it changed but i was told it was about 90-100% markup from the store price
So if a Jackson cost 1000 they would sell for the 1899 range

I wish this were the case , but unfortunately, it’s not. Regardless of your order quantity. You may get free shipping if you hit a certain dollar amount (with Marshall I believe it was $3500) , but there isn’t any store out there making that kind of mark up on new Marshall gear

Now I'm confused, then how much is the markup, 'on average'?

If I had to give one number on brand new non-custom gear, I've never had a problem finding at least a 15% discount with very, very few exceptions. Margins can change even within the same brand for the same kind of product, though. For instance, Brand A microphones may have model 1 with a 15% margin, model 2 with a 36% margin, and model 3 with a 7% margin.

Does the item being sold matter, what I mean is, do some items warrant more of a mark down over other things sold or does that even matter?

I'm not an industry insider or anything, so I can't be sure if there is a trend in certain categories for pricing. I would say it depends more on brand positioning than the cost of parts and labor. There are some industries that operate on a cost plus model alone, but they tend to sell products with fewer distinguishing elements. In guitarland, however, we have mojo which, of course, is priceless, and can be found in everything from KT88 tubes to WIMA caps to our favorite guitarist's signature on a chassis, or none of those.

I know this for a FACT, I saw the pricing myself when considering one of these. I can buy it at this price personally. I can’t tell you where/more for obvious reasons, thanks. ;) There is as least one place that gets this prcing.

I would give you $400 for that Marshall greenback loaded cab that you can get for $350 and drive to Indiana to pick it up! That would be a sweet connection to have.

Another thing I can't understand is why is it that the customer who is the one purchasing the product for personal use is the one responsible for providing sales tax, yet no one down the line (the maker, the wholesaler or the store), pays any tax.

This is how business works, regardless if it's a guitar, or a pair of shoes. Resellers pay no sales tax, end-users do.
Once again, the burden is put on the customer.

How about when you win a lottery?

You pay sales tax to buy the ticket, then you pay tax again when you win, it's not right...
Corporations/companies large and small do not ever pay taxes. That is why I am against taxing corporations for anything other than the cost of the government services they require (police, fire, etc). They pass all taxes to their customers, so we take it in the shorts whenever they get taxed.

Dealer cost on a 1960AX is well over $900, plus inbound shipping, at $1399 MAP. That is GOLD level dealer pricing. Music store employees can get a discount as an accommodation. Whatever you saw was either a one-shot deal for a huge overstock sale (Jubilee reissues got blown out last year like that, maybe you saw that), a blem or you saw the DISTRIBUTOR’S cost, which I know has snuck out by accident before (hiding Excel columns instead of deleting them, whoops). Unless Sweetwater is buying a full 40 foot container direct from the UK and going around the distributor (with Marshall in breach of contract) whatever you saw was an anomaly and is definitely not industry standard. My rep would lose his ass if he took an order at those prices. I was a manufacturer’s rep in this industry for 14 years, and I promise you the margins you are talking about typically only happen right before someone gets arrested for tossing new gear in the dumpster during the day and picking it up at night.

When Guitar Center and MF approached me to carry Scumbacks years ago, they were requiring 60% off retail to place an order. I told them I didn't need their business. They were shocked, and tried to renegotiate, I told them to get lost.

That was 4-5 years ago. And now you know why they can have 50% off retail sales.

The higher markups are on strings, cables picks, sticks, etc.

That is a very, very bold opening salvo. 60% off retail!

Which is why I told them to pound sand.
