Just so everyone knows, I call all of you "idiots" as my brothers here on the forum.

Seriously though, wondering if anyone owns or has played a Gibson Les Paul Special? I've had the other types of Gibson guitars but never played one of these. I've never even played P-90s before. I've been intrigued recently and just wanted to get everyone's thoughts.

Some friends and I have been playing some punk stuff and just seems like a great guitar that is lighter in weight and would sound good for that type of music? Any info would be helpful. Thanks!

BTW, looking at the T.V. yellow singlecut one.

TV Yellow LP specials are awesome. I really dig LP’s with p90’s and yeah these guitars are rock as fuck. Great for punk stuff.

do you still have the blue one? that thing is sweet

I don't like any new guitars, zero. For me nothing beats anything vintage. The woods used for fingerboards these days is dyed crap but what do I know as an idiot

I haven't played that exact model, but got a new Junior with single P-90 in the bridge a couple of years ago. I'm a lifelong humbucker guy, including countless Les Pauls with them.

One of my biggest regrets in ALL of many years of gear collecting is not trying one sooner...P-90 is FAT tone. Sure, definitely great for punk (I've played like old Black Flag tunes with them and sounds great), but you might be surprised how well they work for harder rock too, though they can be a little noisy. I especially like for mid to late 70's hard rock, but works well for a lot of stuff.

I think back when I was researching them I heard a few opinions here and there that the single bridge P-90 Gibsons have a little something extra going on tonewise over dual pickup models, but I don't have any personal experience with that.

I’ve got a ‘92 that’s beat to shit and totally badass. The tone you can get from P90’s is killer.

I'm sold!! I know some of the tones you like so makes me think I'd dig it!

Thanks everyone for the replies, all good stuff!! I had a "feel" of what it would be/sound like but since I have no experience with them, just was a hunch.

I just keep thinking, I eventually need to dive into the P90 pool and get wet. I've humbucked and single coiled my life away.....LOL

Fuckin’ A I still do! It’s a “lifer”. Total sleeper/ripper guitar for me.

Yeah man me too. Never thought I’d be a P90 guy but here we are! The work great for so many things. My P90 LP > KSR Gemini > Airis Tight Pre will thrash your balls off.

P90’s bridge between single coils and humbuckers. You can hear both in them so they’re definitely cool. I tried some hotter aftermarkets and they loose the tone that makes P90s great. My bridge is 9.2k and seems to be perfect.

Go watch old Y&T videos (Santa Monica Civic is a great one) and check Joey Alves’ tone for great 70s-80’s hard rock tone. Fucking killer.

Ya, he played an OLD double cutaway LP Junior with a single P90 in it. Sounds great, check out Hang ‘Em High in that live from Santa Monica Civic show on YouTube, you can hear him alone in the intro.

Also, the guy in BlackBerry Smoke plays an old beat up junior and he’s killing it with it. Not hard rock, but great blues rock/ roots music.

Of course Leslie West from Mountain also, Mississippi Queen FTW !!! Lol

I’ve got a TV yellow junior and love that thing. Can play any style with it.

Charlie Starr got his Junior from the dude from Georgia Satellites. He gets a rippin’ tone.

Unfortunatelly this is true and especially for ebony they opt for the "richlite" stuff which is basically made from paper :-D
