Overrated? I actually think he is underrated.

Tom Morello deservers plenty of praise. He has a unique style and sound, and while he might not be flashy as George Lynch or anything, he has a mastery over effects and getting interesting sounds from, and an ability to hit the right notes at the right time to speak to people. That being said, I've never really enjoyed any music he's done outside of Rage Against The Machine, although his tastes/playing are to be respected.

Don't like Morello at all...I never much cared for Rage...and I think he's supremely overrated (as is Rage..no offense..just my thoughts on the band as a whole..with one or two songs as exceptions..it all sounds like the music from a Shaft esque movie)

in that clip though I'll say this... he's a friggin' virtuoso compared to Bruce....'The Boss'...awful song writer, awful singer, awful guitar player..talk about overrated as a musician....ugh...

Jim, I think Tom knows plenty of scales he just chooses not to play them much.

I like RATM and Tom. Say what you want about Rage and his playing style but he was one of the few guitar players from that 90's era that actually had a unique voice and style on the instrument. I'm a fan.

Let me qualify what I'm about to say; I am not a Bruce Springsteen fan at all,...not even slightly. With the exception of a couple songs I dislike is stuff and own none of his music,....not my thing.

Saying Bruce is an "awful song writer and singer" is absurd. He's written many songs that have touched a lot of people and he's still relevant after 35+ year career. You might hate his style of music, image, etc, but there's a reason for his success. He is talented, not as a "guitar player" but as a mainstream pop rock song writer.

Not my style of music, but I have allot of respect for Bruce. He has written some excellent songs and he truly believes in and feels what he plays. How many musicians could do what he does at his age. He literally soaks the stage. Have you ever seen him live? He's quite powerfull.
U2 is another great live band. My Wife loves them. I am not at all upset that I will sitting not too far away from the front of the stage when they hit Lincoln Financial field. There are not allot of acts that get the football arenas. Bruce and U2 are two of them.

I guess I subscribe to a different type of mindset in this regard..popularity never equaled quality to me...let's not forget...William Hung sold about a quarter of a million copies of his 'CD' =) Plenty of shit acts have sold out arena's dude...doesn't mean shit..sometimes commercial success and quality meet, but it's not the rule....

I've never been nor will I ever be a Bruce fan..most of his songs don't even have any friggin' changes! LOL

it's not absurd..it's my OPINION..and I'm allowed to have it =) absurd would be saying the sky isn't blue..hehe There are plenty of people who's music I don't like but I can respect them as musicians....Billy Joel...great song writer...but I don't like his music...I totally respect, say, the Beatles even though that type of music isn't my bag...

like I said to Danyeo..I don't equate commercial success with quality in any way shape or form..sometimes the two go hand in hand, but that's so not the rule...

that being said..I wno't say he's a bad PERFORMER....he goes apeshit on stage..and that's cool for sure...I just think as a musician/pop song writer...well, he's just way overhyped....that's my opinion and I'm sticking with it.. =)
