First time I heard them was at Lolapalooze in 93 and the rocked the shit!!! Went out and got the album the next day. Wasnt a huge fan after that album, but still like and appreciate what they do. I like Tom cause he is a good player and doesnt afraid of anything......errrrr.....I mean he stands up for what he believes in and actually tries to do something about things he sees as problems. I used to be one of those that thought he wasnt that good cause he just made noises, but I look back on that as ignorance on my part.

He needs to look at himself in the mirror and lower that guitar a few inches

Steve
He's gotta keep his guitar up there, so he can pull off those over the top riffs!

Love him. Then again I don't suck the 80s dick like so many players. I enjoy a lot of kinds of styles of music. I'll say this, the riffs on RATM albums are HUGE.

So, you're admitting that you're an equal opportunity dick sucker then? :D

he's actually a very accomplished player/shredder, he just takes a lot of inspiration from Dj's instead of other guitarists. the result is an unconventional approach to guitar.

just because he doesn't typically play guitar in a "normal" way, it doesn't mean that he can't

in answer to the OP's question, i was a huge RATM fan, and i even enjoyed the first audioslave record.

Exactly Tom can rip it up with the best of them actually. I saw him with Audioslave right after their first album and he tore it up all night. In the first clip here from the RnR HOF he's playing out of key on purpose, what purpose I don't really know, I'm not crazy over that performance either.

I thought RATM was the shit! It was a nice change from the Aquanet seen :D

Morelo can play conventional if he wants, he has the chops. I like the fact that he chooses not to. Even when he sounds like cats fucking or fighting.  Takes big balls to stick your neck out like that

I too thought the solo was out of place in the GOTJ video

The RATM clip was powerful to say the least  Saw them live years back and the shows were intense, like a Pantera show intense!

I thought Audioslve sucked

My .02 ;)

Rage was just a seriuos flat out rockin band. I saw them years ago. Everytime they play that song they have something to say. Yes, he's very unconventional, but I would bet he can play conventional whenever he wants too. He was the first kid ever in his school to be accepted to Harvard and graduated with a political science major. Without him the band Tool would never have formed. He was friends with Adam Jones who moved to Los Angeles around the same time as him. Morello introduced Jones and Maynard James Keenan to Danny Carey, who would come to form the band Tool. He also did an acoustic act The Nightwatchman.

His playing strikes me as interesting but not spectacular. I also loved RATM and the first Audio Slave. After 20 years of the same guitar tricks, I am quite bored by him. But what do I know? He's famous and I'm not. I do not care for his politics at all. He does also seem like a nice guy who would be fun to hang out with (as long as politics aren't discussed)

Absolutely. I just don't like 80s hair metal cock as much.

I saw RATM in about 1995ish in Albuquerque with 311 and Cyrpess Hill. That fucking shit was absolutely brutal. The pits were incredible, people were jumping over my head and shit. They sounded fantastic and tight as a mofo. 311 killed it too and Cypress Hill actually payed real instruments. That was one of my favorite shows ever.

RATM has one of the greatest rock rhythm sections ever IMO. If could start a band with ANY players I choose, it would have Brad and Tim in it. But in the meantime.....Ill keep practicing :D

I certainly can't knock the guy's talent, but I never really got into his playing. I'm all for innovation, but just because something's different doesn't make it good.

Plus he's a Cubs fan :bleh:

I dig him. I think he's unique and I totally dig his style and sound(s).

Can't stand Springsteen though, no dice.

As for Tom's guitar position, it was explained to me and it totally makes sense - watch ANY guitarist who slings his guitar low (to look cool) play a solo. They always always always end up soloing with their foot up on a stage monitor, or kneeling down with one knee propped up, or backed against something in order to brace their arm/shoulder. Why? Because it's necessary to have the ax up higher to your chest to play high on the neck - you can't play technical, or even mildly technical stuff - high on the neck with an ax slung low.

Tom just straps it high to remove the need to pose during solos. As mentioned, I dig his style, he's unique.

Peace,
V.

I like him, although I can understand the hate on here, with all the 80's fans that enjoy wankery

I will say some of that sounded out of place for that song, but I like Tom overall. you definitely always know it is him, and generally the best guitar players have a recognizable sound that you never confuse with someone else...

Best post of the thread that sums it up. Most guys on here don't like a player if he doesnt do the weedily weedily 80's shit fast as fuck. I've not liked all Tom has done but he has his voice and can play the straight up stuff as well.

I'll give him props for the first three Rage albums.

That doesn't mean anything to a good portion of posters here. BTW I greatly disagree with Tom's politcs...... But on her it''s all about the fast licks and spandex.

He does his thing ... Has no where NEAR any talent compared to most real "guitar players" out there (George Lycnh - Steve Vai- EVH .... "L E A D " players - guys that can "play a solo") but he does have a feel - he way over uses FX too... just my 2 cents...

But I can understand how some like his "feel"...

If he locked himself in a room with a metronome for 6 months i bet he'd have the chops of Lynch or Vai. Let me hear Lynch or Vai write anywhere NEAR as cool a riff off anything from the first RATM album. Writing songs and riffs are what 99% of the world considers talent, not the physical ability to play a C Minor scale in triplets up and down the neck. That bores the shit out of most any who isn't a guitar player, and most guitar players as well.
