I agree with Steve and Pat...just get a chinese duncan and wax it! Wait a minute that's not what they said...the vodka and the stars and making me have memory problems!

I'd say MCP black belts. I have a set in my LP and they're never coming out. I saw a guy on here put up a pretty good van halen clip on YouTube, was like bmf5150 or something  I'd check that out, sounded the best out of all the VH clips to me

SD Custom Custom.........without a doubt
Not even close if you are looking for the tones from the first 4 albums. Here is what I have tried that will really get you there with the right amp and guitar:

Mojave Pickup
Tom Holmes 455
Duncan '78
Voodoo '59
High Order 8.3K

Basically, you are looking for an 8.3-9.3K resistance, low output PAF-like pickup. There are plenty of them. Probably a Duncan '59 or a Dimarzio PAF would work just as well for this tone as the expensive pickups I've noted here. To me the best for this tone I've tried is the Mojave pickup, closely followed by the Duncan '78...

Here is a clip of the Mojave pickup:

Jamie's Cryin'

Here are clips of the Duncan '78:

Solo Clip I
Solo Clip II

Steve

Steven,

What pup did you use on the Wing Solo? That was a cool unique take on it while still enough like the song to feel the vibe.

The MCPs are very bass heavy pickups. Read what others are saying here and obtain a slight sense of humor...

Maybe you missed my attempt at being sarcastic :dunno: Also, FWIW mine aren't bass heavy and they're the only pair I've heard that's all I have to go by :scared:

Does Duncan still make the EVH (Evenly Voiced Harmonics)?

Yes, I just bought one. It's called the '78 instead now. I would have to say out of all the pickups I've tried, this one is very VH, early thru 1984 IMO. There are many imitations but there is no substitute.

I see... I remember hearing clips of it years ago (when it was called the EVH), and it was like dead-on VH.

Yeah, I don't understand how all these EVH nuts rack their brain over which pickup for what, as soon as I played a few chords it had that sound.

I have heard the Duncan EVH/78 is a real bright pickup. I thought the alnico 2 magnet would tame the brightness.
Can anyone who has owned both compare it to the custom custom . Thanks.
Aloha, Rob.

What's wierd is that I get more of the "old" EVH sound with my P90 Axis

i had a pearly gates that was noisy as all get out-humbucker my eye-and sounded like a broken hummer/single coil twangy honk that had lifted weights, but it had some EVH soul. it was as close to the EVH duncan as i've heard in their stock series, but the EVH was more fiery and had a bigger goose under the hood.

custom custom had way more bass end. very mike anthony.

i also have a mojave pu that chubby sold me which i have not yet installed into a gtr. i bought it for my super strat, but gave the gtr to my nephew before i could install the new PU. also have the high order 8.3 but that one sounded more fusiony/legato in a basswood strat i installed it in. nice warm horn tone, just not as brown as i'da thought in that axe. more holdsworth tone than the holdsworth duncan i had! hmm maybe i need to build a holdsworth legato axe...

the pickup thing is such a hassle to experiment with man, but when you finally realize what it's doing to the tone it's a major eye opener.

same with speakers and tubes and woods.

and sadly by the time most of us tone goobers have the whole shebang figured out, we are one hundered and elevendy kabillion years old.
