This was a few years ago at a GC - new guy was very aggressively trying to make a sale.

I was playing through an Electra-Dyne for the first time and really digging it and checking out pedals, etc and he comes over and compliments my playing.
Then when I started talking he interrupted me and asked about my rig. I told him what I was using and again he interrupts me, and out of nowhere, says I should buy a Boss Noise Suppressor pedal....I said that my rig is very quiet and I don't need one and that if I did purchase one, it'd probably be a different noise gate.

I'm not making this up--He replies, "well you might not be using your rig correctly if you're not getting any noise".... WTF???

Haha, that ones too funny! One hell of a salesman, wonder if that ever worked on anyone.

That is classic! My personal favorite is when I was at GC in Sherman Oaks, CA. In desperate need of a 12AX7 tube (desperate is the only reason I would EVER go to GC for a tube) and the sales kid was tying to convince me that an EL84 would work in place of a 12AX7

I was looking for a 12ax7 once. Two local stores (one out of business now) told me that all 12ax7's are the exact same...same sound/tone....just different labeling...I told them no that's not so...I didn't buy tubes from them

I had an idiot at GC try to tell me that the black fret protector on an Anderson made it a "fretless guitar as well!"

I had a tech tell me the same thing. I did a full retube of my Pittbull. I picked out specific preamp tubes for different slots, so I wrote down where I wanted them. I dropped the amp off at a local store to have the tubes installed/amp biased, a half hour later the tech calls me saying that he's a professional and that he doesn't need to be told where to put the tubes, saying the same thing, all 12ax7's are the same. I told him that I had someone from an online store help me pick all of them out(VQ), he scoffed at that. "and you believe what those boutique places tell you?" He argued with me for 20 min, saying the same things over and over. We hung up, he calls me back five minutes later wanting to argue again, lol. He had the nerve to claim that it was me he was concerned about "if I just throw them in there and bias it I'll feel like I'm not doing enough for your money". If you're really that concerned just charge me less, lol. I honestly think he was having a terrible day or something and just took it out on me. Better me than some kid or something

I was looking at a brand new custom shop les paul (A NON-RELIC MODEL MIND YOU) that had some small dents in the back and top was beat up from basically being on the floor for so long and being handled by morons...

Anyway, I pointed the dents and stuff out to the manager of the "High End" room at GC and he said they come that way...

It's called "Pleking"...!!!

I've always thought that buying a new guitar, in store, is like marrying a prostitute

Went with a coworker to GC to help her pick out an acoustic for herself. She had a budget of $200. I found a nice Epi, but it had a low 9th fret. Seeing how i build guitars, i didn't think it was an issue. I'd fix it for her, The guitar was great otherwise. perfect action and great sound for a $200 guitar.

Sales woman says they have a few more in the back and she'll bring a couple out to see if there is one without the bad fret. "Sure thing" i said.

First one she pulls out is busted to shit. I mean literally destroyed in shipping.

Second one seemed OK, but the action was a bit high. She noticed this and without looking at the neck, adjust the truss rod to bring the action down. She says "Nope, this one is defective". I gave a her a fucked up look and looked at the guitar while she was unboxing another one. She gave it a ridiculous amount of back bow, so all the first few frets were fretting out. I say nothing. I didn't want to cause shit.

Pulls out a third one. Low 5th fret. "Nope, this one is defective too". Getting irritated with this, otherwise really nice girl.

I tell her i want the first guitar we looked at and i'll just fix it. "OK, well it's defective, so we cant take it back if you purchase it" she says. I said "It's a low fret. That is not a defect. If that was a defect, 90% of your stock would be defective." She didn't say anything, but she did give us a $20 discount.

Regardless, the guitar is great, so she bought it. But at that point i remembered why i never go in that place.

People who work at guitar stores like Guitar Center or Sam Ash know zero percents about everything. Which amounts to nothing.

My biggest pet peeve of all time is when music stores (especially GC) don't list the speakers that a cab has on the tag. Especially used cabs. I was in GC last week, looking at a used Marshall 4x12. No way of knowing what speakers were in it and GC doesn't check. I asked an employee and he's like... uh yeah they're Celestions. Oh really? Celestions? Thanks brah, that's super helpful! How about what model, Celstion makes like 30 different speakers.

I told this story on another site.

I found a used Marshall 4x12 in Totawa GC that I wanted. It was a Greenback loaded slant cab, and I "THOUGHT" it sounded good when I tried it. I told them I was interested and at first they were FIRM on the price and wouldn't haggle with me. I think it was selling for $475 and I whipped out $425. Then the manager comes over and tells he researched it on Ebay and other sources and he said his price was right. I mean, he said the Greenbacks in the cab were worth it alone. I aasked to open the cab to confirm the Greenbacks were in it and they gave me the a long winded excuse about not opening it up. I thought I could still return it. So I took the cab at $475 but they gave it to me for that price out the door. They told me that I, ME, that I stole the cab from them at that price.

So, I get the cab home and it sounded weird with my amps. I tried to get along with it for a few days but something was up with it. So I take the back off and WHAT did I find. NO GREENBACKS. There were 3 75 watt Celestions and 1 Eminence speaker. Now wonder they didn't want me opening it.

I was pissed and threw it into the back of my pickup truck, and I did kinda forgot that the back gate of my pickup truck sometimes doesn't close all the way and opens up. So I heading down route 22 and I heard something, look back and the cab flew out of the back of my pickup and landed right on route 22. An 18 wheeler was behind me and slammed on his brakes and was about 2 feet from totally crushing the cab. I pull over, grab the cab while a traffic jam starts to build up and run it off to the side of the road.

It was a used cab anyway and it had wear, but now it had some more wear but I was amazed that it survived the fall pretty well. BUT, there was something loose in the cab. Opened it up and 2 of the magnetics fell off the speakers, so I popped them back on and sealed it back up. I did this on the side of the road about 1/4 mile from Springfield GC.

Since I was right by Springfield GC I just brought it back there. Wheeled it in and told them it had the wrong speakers in it. They took it back without hardly even looking at it. Got my refund and got the Hell out of there. I have no idea if the speakers worked or what happened to it.

Was I wrong? Maybe but felt like they tried to get one over on me. They could have scrapped those speakers and reloaded the cab and still sold it. I sure hope nobody else bought or if they did, tested the heck out of it.

wow... thank you for assisting me in my lifes mission to get gc back for all the bs,lies, and low offers they have thrown at me over the years you are my hero I think what you did was justified. One little detail that might make it not ok is if a cool dude just happens to buy it plugs his head in and melts his transformer because the speaker load is off on the cab

That would most likely happen to one of GC's amps while said dude is trying it out before he buys, double win.

While not incorrect, this was one of those moments that had me shaking my head. I went into GC looking for a Dimarzio Super Distortion or a Duncan Distortion. After realizing they didn't have what I was looking for, the salesman asked what kind of music and bands I was into. I told him I typically listen to metal and listed a handful of bands. I mentioned Mastodon, Gojira, Machine Head, & maybe a couple of others. He acted as if he knew who I was talking about, so he breaks out a Duncan Invader to sell me on it. Now I know the Invader can do metal just fine, but it was his sales pitch that killed me: "The Invader is a great pickup. Tom Delong from Blink 182 uses it." After the bands I listed, which he acted as if he knew, he tried to sell me a pickup using Blink 182. Seriously? haha

I was told that my Jeff Beck Strat's bridge shouldn't float because it will never stay in tune.

True story!!! What made it even worse is that it was MY old guitar that I sold to somebody that traded it in to the GC.

Well I bought a loaded Mesa IIC+ from Guitar Center for $1100 because they thought it was a Mark III.

Awesome deal!

Like my SC-58 for 1799$. Some numb nuts put a sale tag on it, but the wrong one...
My Jubilee for 650..gotta love GC..back to the original question. In the same night 2 different people told me as follows.."you sound just like Steve Perry"..lolol..then an hour later.."you sound just like Layne Staley"...boy they must have been loaded..

Yeah I always try to get them to open up the input jack to at least shine a flashlight on the magnets to tell me what's in there. I saw a Fender Tonemaster cab for 189 at a GC out east and of course someone pulled the V30s that originally came with it..Rockdrivers in their place. Pass...eventually found one for 269 and they had the V30s..I still think GC online is a good source if you have the time to peruse..

I went to a GC in Houston one day to return a Dunlop Wah pedal. They claimed they didn't have it in their system and the serial number didn't match any of their inventory. I proceeded to raise hell about it and it happens that they had the guitar chops contest going on there. So to shut me up they gave me full store credit. I walked out with some other merchandise and was happy. Turns out two days later I was cleaning out my glove box in my Camaro and found a receipt for the wah pedal and it turns out I bought it from Rockin Robin Guitars!! LMFAO..
