Now, I'm on the younger side of this board but stories like this make me feel bad about myself and my accomplishments thus far...

Dad takes 11 year old son to Steel Panther show
Son brings sign that read "I Challenge Satchel To A Guitar Solo"
Steel Panther bring said 11 year old on stage
11 year old kid shreds Eruption better than I can

So we should get this kid with that 11 year old chick singing Dio and Maiden and that little 6 year old kid drumming some Crue and then find and equally aged bass player and we will have the next big rock band...

Sure he did................... :gethim:

Well we'll just put this in place instead for now.

Not nearly as shred worthly, but still decnet and very funny

Kid plays a real guitar, not a video game!!

That is news right there...

Rock on kid...

You know the main reason we're seeing all these kids who can nail 80's music is because "WE" the 40 year old fathers that didn't "make it" are living our dreams through them. Heck, learning songs is really just muscle memory when it comes down to it, and kids are better at learning muscle memory than teens or adults. It makes sense to me really, but I'm still waiting for one of these shredder kids to write a hit song. ;)

Yeah, learning movements is one thing.. taste, experience, writing talent is something else. Some youngsters has it, most are just good at plagiarism.

I would also include the game Rock Band as a big influence, getting kids to hear and appreciate great classic rock.

I'll take this over kids learning how to rap any day of the week.

I'll add a tidbit. Think of all the resources that are available today that were not 30-35 years ago, as far as learning to play guitar. I was gathering up materials to teach a youngster to play acoustic guitar this past year. When I asked the music store salesperson for a set of "pitch-pipes", I was told about some neat clip-on electronic tuners. I then replied, "Step one is being able to hear the notes". He thought about it for a few seconds and agreed completely. Video lessons and tab can teach a young person to play a song, but they may never hear the nuances and dynamics of the playing. Tune the ears up first.

Well you saw what happened when the singer wanted him to adlib..... It was deffinately not FTW... Now me on the other hand, I would suxxors the stage up if I tried to play Eruption properly, because I've never cared to learn it mostly, but I could do some back and forth with the singer properly if I had to. Like I said, kid was showing some really good muscle memory IMO.

The tell tale moment is when the singer deviates from the song structure and tries to set up a classic call and response interaction with the kid and he is totally like a deer in headlights, as soon as the song was back on, he was back in it. but no improv, no idea or clue what to do there etc. there is really no substitute for experience.

that being said, he just experienced rocking out with steel panther…so there is always that…which is nice.

Zactly..........

FWIW, dude from SP's best accomplishment IMO was touring with Rob Halford on the first Fight tour. He was the only "LA" looking dude in the band, but he knew his way around a fretboard, and when doing JP tunes, he did Tipton's parts better/faster/tighter that GT himself IMO. Thing is though, I actually remember the bass player the most from that tour, as he added a certain performance/intensity/stage presence thing that the rest of the band, sans Rob, seemed to be missing.

I'm not saying the kid is Mozart, but pulling off the song as cleanly as he did was pretty impressive. He was wearing a School of Rock shirt and they probably start kids off learning songs and then use the songs to teach about music, but who knows, I've never been to one... Let's see if he can make that connection between the recorded songs and improv, that's always a big ol breakthrough as an up and coming guitar player

Steel Panther is great just for doing that with the kid. At 11 years old, I was more concerned with Star Wars and G.I. Joe to even try to play Eruption (especially on stage with a band in front of that many people) so hats off to the kid!

Steve

So pissed I couldn't catch that show (I live in KC), but since it was on a Thursday night I didn't feel like getting 4 hours of sleep before work haha. But at least I've been able to see Steel Panther twice now and it's always an awesome show. My buddy actually linked that video to me and I was impressed within a few seconds. Put that kid in a band already! He definitely has the abilities - just needs to learn how to adapt and create.

Good stuff!

Scary how good these kids are! But Steel Panther rules - great senses of humor and very humble after all!

Eyes of a Panther is a killer tune too!

Thanks for putting the real link in whoever... YouTube is blocked at work so I couldn't check if I got the link right or not... I bet a few people were a tad confused for a bit there...
