...and why?

Looking for other responses besides 'Eruption'. If you'd rather talk about your favorite tone or riff that's cool too. There are tons of them. Some friends of mine thought Eddie was just a wanker guitar show off and everything sounded the same (to their limited ears). I think his guitar catalog of achievements is pretty broad.

Here are some of mine:

1.) Outro solo on 'One Foot Out The Door' (2:47 mark below)
2.) Solo in 'I'll Wait'
3.) Eruption of course

This album was a favorite of mine because it was so dark and thick. It is one of my favorite Eddie tones too. I also feel like they were at their prime. I dug his earlier tones and later tones too for different reasons but the solo in this song which also ends the album is just special for me.

Honestly, anything on the first two albums. Utter reckless abandon, slipping and sliding, great note choice and placement, unbelievable feel and swing. The fucking apex of rock guitar.

Yeah this. I also always loved #1 from the op. Push Comes to Shove was always another fave of mine. And that whole intro to Little Guitars...badass.

Huge fan of Dance the Night Away and intro to Women In Love. Little Guitars is also a fave!!!

Read the title and instantly Ice Cream man popped in my mind. That was such an original fun solo.

Watched a bootleg from 1984 in Montreal last night. For the love of God. They were so amazing back then. Ed destroyed all night long.

Too many favorites to name for me.

I watched that too last night on the big screen after watchin 'Live Without a Net' DVD. Brought me to tears.

Too many good solos to pick just one. As far as tones... I know I'm in the minority on this one, but his tone from the For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge album is absolutely tits for me. That is the tone I always have in mind when I'm dialing in an amp.

Top Jimmy.

That solo is untouchable. The beginning with the harmonics and dive-bombs/ pull ups is insane.

VHII is probably my fav album, but all of them are fantastic. Light up the Sky, Somebody Get Me a Doctor, You're No Good, Dirty Movies, Mean Streets are probably my favorite CRANK THE SHIT OUTTA THIS! Riffs. Way back in HS we used to crank DOA on the bus on the way to football games...got us all pumped up. Lol.

My fav Solo is I'm the One followed by Ice Cream Man. But I loved everything by Ed. Everything.

Agree agree agree. Loved everything Ed.

The best

Fave song - On Fire, Fools, I’m The One, Romeo Delight, Mean Streets, Girl Gone Bad

Too many

Fuck it

Here is another that is probably not top in your mind. It is the solo in the middle of 'Big River'. It is almost a minute long. Go to 1:45. Like Eruption, it kind of summarizes a lot of his styles at once.

Push Come to Shove is my favourite Van Halen solo-

Second Favourite is Pleasure Dome. Ed was on fire on the FUCK album-

 Yeah. Just so much going on. Lots of anger and attitude.

I did not embrace EVH as an influence, nor did I attempt to mimic him. It was just too different from what I was doing. It wasn't so much Ed's lead playing, which is awesome, but his approach to rhythm and sycopation. If I had to guess, I'd say that Deep Purple/Ritchie Blackmore was a primary influence on Ed. Sort-of a mixture of Deep Purple and BOA? Try playing Rainbow's "Man On The Silver Mountain" using your EVH tone rig... Works perfectly.

Blackmore is a notoriously lazy rhythm player, I don't see a connection, other than that Blackmore was around before Ed, and I'm sure Ed listened to him somewhat.

Learning to See.

Not nearly as polished as some other solos, but the sheer ferocity gets me

That is such a hard question to answer. So many amazing choices to choose from. I think I'll go with "I'm The One". It's just got a little bit of everything.
