What is your "go-to" hi-gain amp??

Framus Dragon. Excellent high gain and clean channels and very good mid gain channel as well.

Fortin Natas!!! The Fortin Meathead would be awesome too!!

I'm going to pretend I didn't read the disclaimer "and how's its clean channel" as "best high-gain amp" and "clean channel" don't compute for me, so I'll just give it straight up:
Uberschall Rev.Green
Diezel VH4
Mako Mak4 Preamp (Dorado Channel)

It's cool seeing all of these replies of amps you guys like! Seems to be a couple of amps that reappear here and there. Must be a reason for that!

I find myself oddly interested in getting another Mesa. I had a Three Channel Dual Rec years ago running through an Orange 4x12 and didn't care for it at all. I know the older Two channel Rectifiers have a great/better overdriven channel, but I've never experimented with their clean(if they even have much of a clean). I suppose I am probably looking at those because of affordability. A VH4 or SLO would be great if I had that kind of fundage!

EVH 5150 iii 112 combo

My initial thoughts on the cleans were... puke...

But! I've had some help with a couple suggestions on another forum how to dial in a decent clean tone and it sounds decent. Its no where near a holy grail tone but I could live with it if i had to. However, the crunch channel on its to die for and since its EQ'd with the clean channel, it makes it a either/or sort of deal.

If your interested in a older 2 channel Rectifier and cleans are important you might want to look at a Tremoverb.
A Mesa Mark IV or III can also be found relatively inexpensive and can do great highgain and cleans.
The Fryette Sig X & Deliverance also can do the entire gain range and can be found used for inexpensive.

I am sure there is others.....

I had a 3-channel Triple and wanted to love it. It sounded so close to awesome, but I just couldn't get it all the way there. Got a 2-channel Triple and have loved it since the moment I turned it on.

Two channel Recto clean gets the job done. I had a VH4 (a few actually) and a SLO as well. VH4 clean was pretty cool, but the Recto Orange channel is just more my thing than the Diezel gain channels. SLO is magnificent and the clean tones are pretty great (tip: for a clean tone, use the crunch channel with low gain and high master. Sounds awesome). But the 2 channel Triple Rec I have actually can cop a similar vibe to the SLO and was so much cheaper, I sent the SLO on its way. Wouldn't mind another some day.

Although I do not own it anymore, the Diezel herbert was the greatest hi gain head I ever owned. It also had the greatest cleans of any high gain amp I ever used. The cleans were bright, full, and did not sound sterile. I really enjoyed the mesa roadking 2's cleans as well.

Hope this helped.

I feel almost the same way with my VHT D120....I can cop almost identical SLO tones with it. I boost my SLO however and without the boost it's different..the D120 has similar punch and articulation as the SLO. And by just turning down the guitar volume, it cleans up really well, even on high gain settings. Uncanny.

SLO I run the clean channel on crunch and use the guitar volume to vary the gain on both channels. More versatile than they get credit for typically.
