Sorry to highjack the thread but, how much of a difference tonally would there be if i replaced all the JJ tubes in my IV with all new mesa tubes, preamp and 6L6 power?

I found the JJ's to have a V type EQ to them Boomy lows and Harsh High's, The Mesas will balance out the amp a bit, tighten the lows a bit and soften the highs, But not nearly as much as the SED's.

I put these in mine and they sound pretty good. Better than the stock tubes that were in it.

my mark IV is my main amp, my favourite of all time and i tried the best for it.
when i came to the SED =C= 6l6 & el34 i found tone heaven. the markIV came to life and sounded richier more aggresive and clear.

try the sed c (6l6 in the inner sockets and el34 in the outer) and you'll be satisfied. those are my tubes of choice

sounds like a HUGE improvement!

yes indeed! btw i like also jj's, but i'm NEVER gonna put a whole set of their preamp tubes in an amplifier you gotta find the right places and they rock, used in every stage will make the amp sound like there's a blanket on it...

I use a combo of a JJ 6L6 & a Mesa/Boogie STR440 (Ruby 6L6), and two Svetlana E.D. EL34s.

I've always hated JJs in a Mesa. And oddly, I've always gravitated back to Mesa branded tubes in a Mesa. That's what's in my Mark IV right now.

I just hate JJ's period, I have a splawn QR coming in with JJ's anyone try the EL34's?

What about 4X6L6 vs 2X6L6 and 2XEL34?

I am always bouncing back and forth between which way I should go to retube my Mark III.

With EL34's youll tighten up the lows, make the amp a bit brighter and a little more aggressive JP uses it in his MK IV's.
I prefer 4 6L6's personally Better cleans and a smoother sound.

I have JJ 6L6GC's in the inner slots and =C= SED 6L6Gc's in the outer slots. I used to have all JJ's, but 2 of them went bad. I generally run my mark IVA in the class A mode. The JJ's were darker and had more lows, but the lows could get muddy easily. Overall I like the SED =C='s better, they have a nicer midrange.

I also agree with the preamp tubes, I have a mix and match in my amp. I tried all JJ tubes in the amp a good number of years ago. I was close to selling the amp at that point.

BTW Doug's tubes, eurotubes, etc should be able to give you tubes in range. Just tell them what amp you have. I had a bias pot put in my mark IVA, but really didn't notice that much difference in sound, it did warm it up a bit.

You know, I don't know why I didn't think about this before. I bought a set of Ruby El34's for my Marshall clone I built not to long ago. So, I just spent an hour swapping tubes. I even pulled 4 TAD 6L6's out of my Recto since I know they are much newer then whatever is in my Mark III.

I must say, I think I really prefer 4X6L6's better. I thought I would like the EL34's, because I would like it more aggressive. But, instead if introduced some cardboard fuzzy frequency in there I cant stand. I prefer a more mid-scooped tone, and I think the 6L6's preserve what I think a Mark series should sound like. That Scooped, smooth, Hi-Fi Metallica type tone. I almost think the EL34's made it not as clear, and more "splattered" across all of the mids. I am not a fan. Reminds me of the same reason why I prefer the red channel over the orange channel on the Recto.
