What Would You Do?

The pickups covers are squealing real bad on my new guitar. I was going to replace them, but I found out they are the same pickups I was going to replace them with, just with the original pickup covers on them. I let them ride, but they squeal at high gain.

I popped the covers off and put electrical tape along the face between the poles. I clamped them back on tight, but they still squeal. Maybe I didn't clamp tight enough? Maybe I didn't solder the covers back on well enough? Anyone have any tips I might be missing? Should I ditch the covers and rock the naked zebra pickups? What would you do?

Put em in wax. A little crock pot is perfect for it. Should fix you right up!

When installing covers, I usually put a little bit of heated wax on the top of the coils, then clamp the cover before I solder. Without that little bit of wax, the can still squeal.

But... as BRENTrocks mentions, you may need to pot the coils, too. That's a slightly more involved process.

What pickups are they?

Make sure the base plate isn't loose.
Had this issue with a tele. Some gorilla glue and cranked them down tight

They are a Duncan JB and a Jazz. They had wax in the covers on the the face of the pickups. Usually a strip of electrical tape is enough to kill the ringing in the covers.

I should check the plate too.

Agreed, rip em off. I thought you had one without covers that was similar, and it looked really good like that.
Yeah. I meant to put those pickups in this guitar, but someone already swapped them to the same pickups. They didn't seat the covers right and they are a mess. I tried to reseat the covers properly, but it didn't work. I put it away and made food so I didn't destroy the guitar in a hangry rage. I'll mess with it again, but I'm still considering that a strong option.

Never swap pick ups on an empty stomach ..... good call
