What's a decent solid state (gasp) amp to get? *NAD & NCD*

I've been using a 44 Magnum pedal as my "practice amp" with a few pedals (distortion/EQ/reverb) and it's worked well for me! At least that way you know you're using good speakers with whatever you have in your cab (V30s for me) instead of some crap budget speakers in a combo or something. My Blackstar pedal sounds pretty good in this setup. Cheers!

I'm thinking I want to go Randall. I had a Peavey Supreme head 15 years ago in jr. high. I don't remember liking it much, but heck I would have been abour 14 years old so who knows lol.

I'm having a hard time finding Randall Vmax heads that have sold. Anyone have an idea what one should go for? There is one on CL not too far from me, that I listed in my last post.

another vote for the xxl. switchable wattage.. multiple voicings.. takes pedals well.. and the loop sounds pretty good too.

Well, I just waited to see if this one was going to sell or not and it did not move. Seller lowered the price, I made an offer, and got it for $150.

What an interesting amp, suuuupppperrrrr freakin' tight gain. It actually sounds pretty damn good for a strait up metal tone. I guess I can see why there are pro players ( like Disturbed) that use Randall. I'm running a a Maxon OD9 clean boost into it. It's exactly what I was after, something stupid cheap, great for low volume, and no tubes ( insert maintenance) for just practicing alone.

Now I can keep the hours and wear off my tube amps, especially when I just want to practice running some scales for 10 minutes before the wife calls out "dinner's on the table."

The seller also had a Marshall JCM 900 B cab for sale. I didn't want it at first, but for $200, I said sure. Should be able to flip it and make a little back.

The XXL is a great SS head. The other guitar player in my band has one and I told him to not get rid of it. Never know when you'll need a back up for his 5150.

I used a Marshall MG100 for YEARS after I sold my first real rig. That thing treated me very well. Kinda wish I still had it.

Old thread.

Yeah.... the Randall went by by. With a boost, it did sound pretty damn good actually, but yeah.... I like tube amps.

I've been a Randall user for years, owned several Randall rg80es, rg100es, rg100ht heads, and with a boost of some sort i've always got a great stoner/doom metal sound that i am happy with. I've played em back to back with Mesa Mark series heads, and several peavey tube heads and they just work for me, and i always go back to them when I try something else out. They are great a cut thru a mix in a band situation great as long as i pair them with the right cab... they are finnnicky with cabs for whatever reason?? Some cabs can sound harsh with em, but recto cabs sound monsterous and very powerful with a rg100es. Cheap, very powerful, and unique sounding. I also really dig the Ampeg VH and SS series amps, they have a unique sound too and are very powerful as well. Not for everyone though.

haha, yeah. Knew it was an old thread. It caught my eye when I was researching the Orange CR120. Someone told me about it so I searched solid state heads. Threw my .02 in there. Sorry for zombifying this thread.
