What's Everybody's Favorite Speaker For High Gain?

In both my Engl pro cabs, it took around a full Year for the V30s to break in. But I wasn't playing loud for a lot of that. Maybe 100 hours Loud volume in a 4x12, less volume more hours. I'd swear it was like a light switch though when it happen. I read on the celestion site once, than a loud clean channel for 15 minutes would get a new speaker 80%-90 broken in. I tried that and it changed nothing. In short, it took a long time.

Can you buy direct from Mesa?

I have a Mesa 2x12. I wonder if I gave them the serial # if they'd help me out?

Unfortunately , I bought the cab used & it's didn't come w/ v30's .

How do you guys feel about the Celestion Century's? Aren't they supposed to be v30's with neodynium magnets instead of ceramic?

I haven't played them, but I seem to remember back when they came out that the general consensus was that the attack was weird. Being branded as a much lighter V30 seems like they would be everywhere, but nobody uses them. It's like anything else though, gotta try it for yourself and see what's up.

Depends on what I'm playing. With my Mark series amps, I like Mesa Vintage 30's. With Csmeron stuff I like G12H30's and original Blackback H30's w/55 hz. I do like to swap in Celestion G12-65's or G12-80's.

If I could only use one speaker, it would be the original Celestjon G12-80's with 444 cones (not the Classic Lead 80's). The G12-80's are thick, tight and never shrill. They cut and stay together under loud volume. They are not my favorite, but generally work with every amp.

I also dig the Heritage H30 55s in my Marshall BHW, but I now have the Heritage 55/75 combo with the 55s on the top in there and they slay. Awesome combo as recommended by glip22. I also have (2) Creamback H75's that I need to check out.

My favorite right now is the Marshall-labeled V30's (T3987 magnet code) in my Bogner 412. I haven't played my current set up in a band setting yet, but I have played a Marshall 1960BV with a DSL100 in a band and it sounded great. The current quad of these V30's were thoroughly punished by the previous owner so they're well worn in. They don't have nearly the harshness of the standard T3903 V30s.

I also like my 16 ohm EVH GBs in my other Bogner, but I run my amp quite differently there. I lay off the preamp gain and use more master volume to get more saturation in the power section and speaker break up. I've found that the GBs really sound pitiful until you start making them scream.

I used to have 2 standard V30s and 2 K100's, but I never fell in love with it. It probably would work better if I tuned low, but I'm a standard/occasional drop D guy.

No reason to change those  After those Heritage's are broken in they are awesome, especially with the mix of hz cones. I like very well broken in V-30's and G12t-75 in an X pattern in an FL cab also, but if it had to be one cab it would be the Heritage mix. I learned long ago not to judge speakers until after break in. I would pop brand new 30's in and they would be for sale right away. Not anymore. Very different broken in and those G1275's take long to break in. I look for old used ones from England and hope the baskets are not bent etc.

I forgot about the G12 80s. I had a 1982A cab from '82 with those, great for high gain as Dave says. Also got 4 from a forum member here. They are celestions version of a neutral/evenly balanced speaker, but the mids are there to cut just not harshly like a V30.

I've got the same combination & its a great setup.

I usually use 25 watt greenbacks for everything but on a whim..I picked up and old beat to hell JCM 800 1960A cab that's loaded with G12T-75's w/1777 cones . They look like 65's having a vent in them and such but anyways..I sealed up the cab with gasket type goop around all the inside of the amp and rewired with 12 gauge and I'm really liking them!! Nice and tight and good audio spectrum. Never liked 75's before but maybe these are beat to crap enough to sound good..lol!!

Definitely depends what heads you are going for. V30's are a great all rounder that most will sound good through. Start to get a little more aggressive on the amp (Framus cobra's, Uberschalls etc) and i personally prefer to drop back to something a little more gentle like greenbacks, otherwise Eminence Legends are absolutely savage speakers. I have a Vader 4x12 and it's crushing with just about anything. Played a Krank Revolution through the cab one time (and i don't really care much for Kranks) and my word it was absolutely crushing.

V30's - Best all Rounder

Eminence Legends - Most brutal :)

Definitely not changing those out. I might experiment with the Creambacks in another 4X12 or put them in my Bogner OS212.
