I like alot of metallica and nickelback stuff. Theory of a dead man and ramstein get a pretty good sound too. Heres a vid I found of james hetfields guitar tech goin over some of his stuff. I found the vid almost worthless until he started talking about the mesa tri-axis rack mount and how theres a little bit of tweaking hesnot supposed to talk about that giver met and het his sound. I wish I could get my live rig to sound like that on his dirty channel. Check it out

For me, it's the tone in the opening riff of Erotic Nightmares by Steve Vai.

holy shit, that last few seconds of vid when he plays with the gain sounds great!!!!

Better put your flame suit on coming in here and talking about Metallica and Nickleback!

Although I hate Nickleback I can't fault their guitar tones.

One of psychodave's modded marshalls. That thing was just nuts.

Yep ,their tones are crazy ,,about 4 or 5 different amps ,mixed down to one mono track.
we are actually doing that now in recording ,I have a BaronB60 ,A Mesa Recto(orange ch) and a 11Rack Bogner Blue "Crunch" sim
Sounds Huge

I could never pick a favorite but I just love how unique the tone is on Screaming For Vengeance. Never heard anything quite like it since, even from Priest themselves.

my fav metal tones

metallica - MOP-black album- LOAD
kse- end of heartache and daylight dies
dokken- back for the attack
lynch mob- wicked sensation
ratt- pretty much all of their albums in the 80s

You're right, I think I heard something about them using more than one brand of head in the video. I have no idea how you would run it, that shit is top secret and they dont let on just like grandma's cookie recipe

Wouldn't call it my fave.........but I do love it. Its really unique and fits the songs perfectly. There's some heavy reverb and chorus on most of the tracks. I think that's G12T-75 speakers as well.

A couple of my faves off the top of my head:

Mercyful Fate - Into The Unknown
Accept - Balls to the Wall
Stampin' Ground - A New Darkness Upon Us

personal preference, older Deep Purple stuff with Blackmore and those modified marshalls with eq boosting sound great. You can hear the amp distortion out of control like Hendrix at Monterey. Plus you still hear the chordal and note articulation, clarity without compressed pre-amp mush. No high output PUPs or other pre-amp gain design, just crushing power tube distortion.

Although not much of a Zak Wlyde fan, those amp sounds on No More Tears are huge in my view, just the right balance of distortion and clarity on the guitar sound.

Lastly, AC/DC amp sounds are pretty iconic on the distortion front, listen to If you want blood you got it - live album.

A Splawn Nitro sounds identical to that.

Mercyful Fate-Don't Break the Oath (I love how the rhythm tracks all sound like they have varying amounts of bass/treble and gain, while still remaining heavy)
Motorhead-Ace of Spades
Opeth-My Arms, Your Hearse & Still Life

Melvins-Honeybucket-what in the hell is this fuzz pedal!?!?

Faith No More-King for a Day, Fool for a Lifetime (I remember reading that the guitar Trey Spruance used was his friends' Samick LP copy with stock PAF's; that puts going through endless aftermarket pickups in perspective)
Danzig II-I want a VHT Pittbull
Tool-Aenima
Mayhem-De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas
Judas Priest-British Steel
Deathspell Omega-Si Monumentum Requires, Circumspice

I Love Distortion.

these for me as well .......

"for a million years" on wicked sensation is about the best tone ever recorded (imo) ...... it just sounds beefier than the rest of the album, i'm guessing he may have used a les paul on that one
Ratt's rhythm tone on invasion is huge and demartini's single coil lead tone on detonator is fantastic
