I saw Metallica live in 2010 and their live sound was a lot better than how it appeared on the recordings. I was surprised how the tones changed to replicate the tones from the albums, which was weird because on the live recordings it was just the same dull blunt mucky sound.

How'd you figure all that out? And yeah thats the weird part, its a LIVE rig and it sounds better than most recorded bands I hear. Well to my ears anyway. Imagine how itd be sitting in front of his mesa cab with that mesa/diezel beast!
 
In terms of what I am playing now...
I really love the tones Rivers of Nihil and Black Crown Initiate had on their recent releases.
I'm also a big sucker for Corelia and Fallujah's tones.

And of course, Opeth.
 
I'd add Dimebag Darrell, both live and studio Pantera. I still remember Primal Concrete Sledge live in a small club in West Hartford, CT, was like being punched in the chest.

I always liked Chuck Schuldiner's sounds (and writing). Tough to pick my favorite distortion though, so many great choices. :confused:
 
2nd the John Sykes record. Also Meshuggah does amazing things w/Cubase (just sayin') - "I am Colossus". FWIW Jake's sound on the first Badlands record is mod-Marshall-mids-heaven.

Yeah, Wolf Hoffmann is an animal of guitar player and his Baldringer modified Marshall was anything else, but not a bad sounding amp :rock:
