Ok, I remembered my favorite. Malcolm's intro to Jailbreak. Not even that distorted compared to most but so meaty and angry. 2nd place to the first guitar chords on Rose Tattoo's The Butcher and Fast Eddy. 3rd to EVH on 1984. Just love the jangle and top end he has. DropDead Legs, House Of Pain, awesome.

Zakk's tone on Ozzy 's live at the Budokan

you just reminded me ... Scott Ian's tone one the big four DVD is massive

Alice In Chains live tone around 2011 when Jerry was using the 50 watt Marsha heads
definitely the greatest distorted tone I ever heard in person
I've seen Metallica in Rock in Rio twice but the guitar tones weren't good, in my opinion
the PA guys screwed with most bands sound, though
Alice sounded amazing at the same show in RiR 2013
tone wasn't as great as in 2011, but only second to themselves

Melvins-Honeybucket-what in the hell is this fuzz pedal!?!?
I'm pretty sure Buzzo uses a Boss ODB-3 bass overdrive and/or an MXR blue box.

I like alot of metallica and nickelback stuff. Theory of a dead man and ramstein get a pretty good sound too. Heres a vid I found of james hetfields guitar tech goin over some of his stuff. I found the vid almost worthless until he started talking about the mesa tri-axis rack mount and how theres a little bit of tweaking hesnot supposed to talk about that giver met and het his sound. I wish I could get my live rig to sound like that on his dirty channel. Check it out

Gosh that bloke waffled on a lot. The "secret sauce" in the 2nd TriAxis preamp, is just a modification of the equaliser inside it. Instead of that "Dynamic Voice", it has the Mesa/Boogie 5-band graphic EQ that comes standard on any Mesa/Boogie Mark series amp since the MarkIIC. I am not sure how each frequency band would be set however, as James has changed his settings over time and likely changed them a lot so the TriAxis will dovetail with the Diezel VH4.

I saw Metallica live in 2010 and their live sound was a lot better than how it appeared on the recordings. I was surprised how the tones changed to replicate the tones from the albums, which was weird because on the live recordings it was just the same dull blunt mucky sound.

My favourite distortion sounds? I'll get back to you on that one...

This is not true. James' Triaxis has many modifications. The DV circuit is actually stock because he has an EQ in the loop.

Voicing tweaks mainly. He wanted to get the IIC+ bite from a Triaxis.

+1 on Cantrell. His tone has always been good but his live tone in recent years is just unreal.

Well ok, that must have been it. I do know he wanted more of the IIC+ sound from the TriAxis, and didn't use the Dynamic Voice.

I don't know why James didn't just use the Studio Preamp, which was the raw MarkIIC preamp circuit. It could easily be modded to IIC+ specs. He used one back in the early 1990s, but for some reason switched to the TriAxis. Which is odd because he doesn't (as far as I know) do much channel switching with the TriAxis, he uses separate units for different sounds- one for clean tones, one for the IIC+ sound, one for the Recto sound (his later 1990s tone was a blend of IIC+ run alongside the Recto sound, both into the Strategy 400 poweramp).

I love that sound! One of my most favourite AC/DC songs too.

Rooster is just perfection in a song writing, guitar tone, and vocals.

Dirty nasty evil tone?

Creeping Death bitchez!!!

I'll play.

I'll make the differentiation from overdrive to distortion, as they are quite different.

I dig a lot of Marilyn Manson's stuff for distortion, as well as Ministry. Here's an example of searing hot distortion:

Quintessential!! :rawk:

I tried but I can't even remotely narrow my list down, so here are a couple just for fun:
