I used to dig the James Hetfield EMG's big-time!

I still do... kinda... but I recently dropped a Duncan Distortion into another guitar because EMG's I felt were too bland for it. The Distortion GRINDS. I love it. It's quite a bit lower output than the Hetfield, but every bit as powerful as the EMG 81 it replaced, and it just has this awesome attack to it and chainsaw kinda aggro mids and highs. Slightly scooped in the low-mids, but not poor in the low-end, which makes it super clear but still chunky.

I think I might get rid of the Hets to try the Black Winter, lol.

Ceramic warpig is retarded. I eneded up switching it out for a holydiver it was just too much

Way big +1 on this. Nobody ever gives this one a whirl, but its a screamer. Way better than the dimebucker or bill Lawrence stuff IMO.

You know it! Screaming high output, perfectly balanced tone. Best high gain/metal pickup ever... no stupid batteries needed.

Gonna go generic here...went from EMG's(Used em for years)...
Then to the Afwayu....then the Aldrich...and landed a guitar with a JB and Holy crap!!
I forgot how bad ass this pickup can get. Been using it the last 2 years. From rock to death metal. :D

BKP Painkiller. A surprisingly open and dynamic pup considering how hot and angry it sounds and feels.

Yep. Everyone gets excited over expensive boutique pickups, but Duncan makes some pretty good stuff. The Distortion was my long time favorite. The Black Winter is awesome, it's basically a modified, improved version of the Distortion. I like the new Nazgul too.

I wouldn't call EMG's boutique, lol, but anyway, how do you think the BW and Distortion compare? The guitar they'd be going into if a fair deal brighter than the one that got the Duncan Distortion, so I'm pretty sure the DD isn't quite going to cut it in this one.

Clearly, I was not talking about EMG's. Obviously, I meant Bareknuckle, Motorcity, etc.
The Blackwinter has a bit more highs, and a bit tighter low end. Other than that they are the same to my ears.

Oh, I thought you were refering to me talking about the EMG Hets as well. My bad. Either way, those Hets sound nice, but are waaaaaay too expensive too.

DMT Tyrant. I mostly use medium impedance and I was surprised what this 16.2k pickup will do

I like my Antiquity JB , hot pickup but not ice picky like the production models are.

Yes i have, my three main guitars have them installed as we speak, Hn3+ is pretty much as hot as the H3+ (i think maybe a little more) but has its emphasis on mids (where H3+ has it on bass and low mids), both have smooth treble but the H3+ has a wall of sound tone and the Hn3+ is more of focused tone, better for shredding guitar. (both pickups are installed in alder floyd rose guitars, the hn3+ to a US San Dimas Charvel and the H3+ to a Jackson RR3)

Both pickups remain articulate under heavy heavy gain, (all Tom Anderson Pickups that i have used have this quality), no matter how much gain you throw at them, each note rings through. They have ended my entire search for pickups the last 2 years (i have gone through the entire lines of Seymour Duncan, Dimarzio, some of bareknuckle's etc).

guitar dependent. typically 12-17K, alnico 3 or alnico 8.

The best High Output "Flame Throwers" Hmm , for me its been the Duncan Distortion and Bare Knuckle Warpig ... Other high out put pickups , I dunno if they are flame throwers lol but close to it : EMGs, Bare knuckle Nailbomb alnico and ceramic both kick ass, the new Black Hawks are also awesome, and lastly the Duncan JB is an all around good one.

Lots of talk about Suhr and Anderson pickups which Ive tried a bunch of, both companies pickups I dont jive with that much... Cool and unique sounding dont get me wrong, I know people love them. Different strokes but to be honest Im starting to think Duncan makes pretty much any type of pickup you could want and most of them sound as good if not better than any boutique pickups out there...Sorry for the off topic rant :D

Seymour Duncan El Diablo & yes the Dirty Fingers pup is still just amazing.

I gotta try these black winters
