I've been shopping around for a change in picks lately. I've been using Dunlop .96mm Gator Grips forever, but now they're boring and I think changing it up could reinvigorate my playing and maybe get me a bit tighter since these tend to wear down very fast. I've been going through all kinds, but all I've kept around are Dunlop 1.0 mm Big Stubbies and XL Jazz IIIs. The Big Stubby is smoother and slips out of grip easier, but it has more snap and a better point than the Gator Grips, and the XL Jazz IIIs have great precision but the thickness doesn't get much snap to it, although it feels super smooth compared to the others on solos. What do you use for your perfect pick, what's out there I should try out? It seems like a small and almost insignificant part of gear to most people, but a good pick can change your playing and tone more than you may realize.

There is a definite tone difference between different picks. To prove it, Random Hero actually did a comparison between a red, black and ultex Jazz III. You could clearly hear the differences. The best pick for me is a black nylon or ultex Jazz III. The max grip ones are also nice.

As far as what you should try, maybe check out this:

I've played the dunlop gator grip, black, 2.0mm for over 10 years. I like them, and they are comfortable, but lately, I can't help to think I'm losing some top end, and chirp that I might be able to get from either a lighter or different material pick. I've been thinking of trying the V pick -- I've heard great things about them.

Dunlop Tortex 1 mm - the blue ones. For what I do they have the best tone and last longer than any other pick I've tried.

I prefer the feel of a purple Dunlop Tortex (1.14mm) but it's a little too edgy on the attack, so I'm currently using green Tortex (0.88mm).

the orange dunlop tortex's. .60mm. perfect IMO
great feel and control and harmonics - stiff enough still for heavy playing, i go through them like candy though. i just buy them a couple packages at a time.

Mine are all custom made by me from human bone for that real METAL feel, but if no corpse is available then just plain old dunlop 1.0mm, black of course!

man i used to play all those heavier guage and jaz3's and all those picks man and after so many years i just keep graduating more and more to the thinner guage picks.
i mean the .60mm dunlops to me - feel like they're stiff enough to play the heaviest music, yet allow a player to soften the touch and add dynamics if they choose.
i just don't understand why people play those heavy guage picks. i hate them lol.
the only downside i can see to the .60's is they don't last long, but they don't cost much lol.
i guess it all comes down to technique i suppose and what a person is used to playing with, and what kind of sounds a person is going for. i mean if you play slower softer music, there would never be a need for a heavier guage pick i guess huh?

The Red Bear picks are the best I have found to date. Been playing the same pick for over a month now ... no wear as if yet. Best sounding pick I've played. I use the Lil' Jazzer model.

I haven't tried a lot of picks but the Jazz IIIs always seem right for me

Gotta be this one.....

Tortex orange or yellow, depending on the song and how much I want to be able to "dig in".
