And less of the LA scene that all looked like pirates and she-men. Most people I knew in the 80's actually didn't like all the hair spray and poodle haircuts. And it's an insult to metal when I heard the term in reference to bands like Warrant, Firehouse, Poison, etc. 80's metal and hard rock was Maiden, Priest, AC/DC, Ozzy, etc.

So here's some great guitar tones from the 80's.

There was only one use for glam metal bands. Panty removers.

The bass player in my band in the 80's had exactly this perspective, and hated playing the glam stuff. The singer was the exact opposite, and preferred the poodle bands. Me and the drummer didn't care, we loved it all, from Poison to Maiden to Metallica, we just wanted to play, party, and have a great time. To each their own, but I kind of liked the whole package that was the 80's.

Amen to OP. I'll take it a step further........there were a ton of unknown NWOBHM bands that never got their due. I hated the whole RATT, Dokken, Crüe, etc scene because it killed a lot of those bands.

Yup, MTV killed the music.

85 to 90 sucked balls, however it was at least possible to get your balls sucked at show by a chick with big hair!

I liked all of the 80's stuff from Maiden, Ozzy, Dio, Priest, Early Def Leppard, Accept, Metallica, Anthrax, Testament, Slayer, Exodus, to Dokken, TNT, Ratt, Motley Crue, Y&T, Loudness to name a few. When band like Poison and Warrant came along it was all down hill from there.

Yep.... when I first joined my band at age 13 the other guys were playing poison and motley crue etc.. I was listening to Priest, maiden, metallica (unknown at this time) queensryche, ozzy etc... I turned them on to the stuff I was listening to and they turned me on to ratt and dokken and other bands considered glam at the time but wrote great songs and played very well. In other words, I knew warren demartini and lynch were better players than the guys in metallica, I was honest with myself about it...it was a fact. I liked good players wherever I found them be it the glam scene or the jeans and t shirt guys. These days I cant stand metallica but I still like dokken and ratt... lol

There were some cool bands that I'm not sure where to place in all that. Kix had some good basic rock. So did Cinderella, but they got plugged into the glam category but seemed more rock.

Shit, I like some bands that never made it big. Brother Cane had a killer CD Wishpool. Lots of great songs on there. Not metal. Just great rock.

But teen girls have ran the biz for decades. Whatever teen girls like, that is what gets the rotation.

We can't forget about the Shrapnel Years too!!! I was really into that stuff in the late 80's!!!

And then there is TESLA!!!!

Although it was 1991. Man In The Box. Evil killer guitar tone from hell. Killed off the hair metal.

Why can't we like Maiden, Metallica, Poison, Exodus, Queensryche, Ratt, Dokken, Slayer, Overkill, Kreator, etc?... I've seen Megadeth 8 times now (Was at the Rust in Peace Live taping back in 09), Slayer probably 6 or so, Exodus, Testament, Overkill, Kreator, Warbringer, etc...
But, if you can't tell, I love myself some Crue and Poison and Leppard and Maiden

Why limit yourself on your music taste based on something as subjective as genre?

I loved all of the 80s stuff and some of the early 90s. Great music to listen to and to play. It was all apart of growing up during that time.

:)

I agree!! I love all kinds of Metal even Death and Extreme Metal, but just could not really get into Poison, Warrant, and Firehouse to name a few.

I was listening to the heaviest stuff that I knew about back then which was Priest, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Accept, etc. as well. Several of us had leather motorcycle jackets with the demin vest put over the top like Slash used to do, and wrote a bunch of metal/band crap on it. My favorite saying on two of our vests was "Poseur Death Squad."

Well, if you grew up in the era it was different. Chicks liked the glam stuff and dudes liked the thrash stuff. Every dude tried not to be a "poser" back then. lol. If you were a dude that liked Motley Crue, you were a poser. If you dared to call Motley Crue metal back then it was a serious offense to the thrashers. It was a different time back then.

Well that was me in high school... When I got into thrash and death metal of old I thought I had to adopt the mentality of the time as well... Glam stood for Gay LA Metal, which at the time gay was derogatory for some reason... But then certain bands started seeping in on recommendation from friends, listened to the earlier Pantera stuff... Then Turbo era Priest... Then Skid Row... Then Kiss... Then the Crue... Then I was a full addict!

I just think in this day and age, genre bias is a tad silly. I say stick with artist bias lol Poison isn't your thing, ya I can see that, but don't dismiss a whole genre of music based on a few bands you don't have a taste for, there may be a few gems that catch your ear like the Skids did when they showed up in my Pantera concert playing a KISS song... Hey man! You got your glam in my thrash!

Oh I agree. I think it's silly now to think like that. Of course, there is still a bunch of glam bands I thought were the worst at the end of the 80s early 90s and I still think they are awful now even though I am more tolerable.
