UGH, Belladonnas band blows compared to the real thing.

Yeah OK.

Well I wasn't trying to be argumentative but sheesh they sound slow, don't play everything correctly, and have bad tone.

The only problem that I can see is they only have one guitar player...sounded good (for a camcorder mic) otherwise

Comparing a studio recording with 2 guitar players to a live recording with a shitty sound man and 1 guitar player is hardly scientific. I'm sure you thought the tone was better when he had Jack Frost in the band.

I never really heard Jack Frost or belladonnas band. But I have heard tons and tons of live Anthrax recordings as well as their live concerts and they have great fucking tone. So I guess I will have to just disagree.

[edit] It sounded OK, sure but not the Anthrax tone I love. Is that your amp or something?

I think the studio clip sounds killer, no doubt. I just put the video up because I think Dave gets a pretty good thrash tone with his 5150. Yes it something I modded, big ass logo kinda gives it away. :)
What Dave can do with it is the magic IMO. I really dig Dave as a player. He usually has the gain set to 4 and never comes off the lead channel.

Ahaha, that figures, I don't like 5150 tones because they have too much low mids. I really didn't even look at the amp. The tone isn't bad by any means, just it doesn't hit that grind that Ian achieves with Marshalls. Also, the TC Electronic Booster/Line driver + JB pickup is a must, i'm guessing this dude didn't have one.

[edit] Ya, I looked, seems like EMGs and I see your big ol FJA logo :) Honestly, i would be interested to hear that amp with the TC and a JB pup.

He actually called me about putting a JB in that guitar. His Les Paul has a JB, but the ESP is his guitar for the Belladonna gig. That ESP came from Scott Crouse in Earth Crisis when Dave played with him in Slave One. I think he uses a BB preamp pedal with the 5150 sometimes.

What do you usually think of? I like a very Clear, articulate, scooped, with really tight bass. I don't like thick low mids for my thrash tones.
So what do you thrash guys think is the ultimate thrash tone? I usually think of ride the lightning type tones, or master of puppets stuff.
You scoop for thrash? I crank the mids to hell for a good thrashy tone.

I think the Engl Savage is the best thrash amp I've ever heard.

Sometimes I do, for the Puppets type of tone on my boogie, But when I Play through plexis I don't scoop the Mids at all, I usually put them around 2:00

Last night one popped into my head that's kind of out of the box, Chuck Schuldiner. Even though Death is kind of grouped in with other death metal bands I always thought of Chuck as being a thrasher  I still have individual thought patterns on regular rotation

I think Chuck used a Marshall Valvestate for most of his career, although I'm not sure what was used in Death's earlier days around 1985-1987 (I'm guessing a dirt pedal into a Plexi or JCM 800?)

I can pick up some modulation from the guitar solo onwards....

I love the demonic deep grind sound from their guitars in this live performance from 1987, despite the poor audio quality.

Now THIS is what you call low mids! Not that woofy bloated muddy tripe!

S.O.D Was a jcm 800 and a TC Boost pedal

I really dig AJFA too..especially the new 2010 japanese remaster is really really cool.

Other than that, tones on Phantom Antichrist (ENGL Invader if Im not mistaken) and Formation of Damnation (EVH 5153) are amazing.

Exodus takes the win though..I think they used mostly ENGL Savage on their last album.

Gary no doubt... But I am kinda of digging this for the new thrash crowd.

Exodus. The tone on Fabulous Disaster is awesome and even though it's the late 80s, it's still the defined thrash tone for me. I also really dig the guitar tone on Tempo of the Damned. The entire record sounds incredible.

Metallica "RTL" is some great tone as well as Overkill's "under the influence".
Vio-lence "Oppressing the Masses" is no joke either
