Seems like it is EVH Tribute week here so let's keep er going.

It just dawned on me today that the drop E with gainz.. is that an EVH thing? I mean, without unchained, do we have Lay it Down , Your in Love and all the other dropped E tunes?

I then was listening to the EVH tribute channel on Sirius and they were playing one of his live solo spots from I think 86 or 88 and I heard all these choppy lead chops that reminded me of Lynch's playing on Beast from the East live LP. So once again, Eddie's DNA all over some of these dick slingers from the early 80's with big hair and killer chops in their own right. Now I know Malmsteen was up and coming around the same time but slightly behind. He mentioned last week that EVH also had a huge influence on him. Is that in his tapping and the tap harmonics he hits up the neck while chording? YJM def. has his own thing going and is a pioneer in his own right but did those few years between 78-81 super charge the donut maestro as well? I think there can almost be no question about it.

Nuno, Warren,Lynch, YJM. Let's talk about the stand out guys with their own style who've got some traces of EVH in their playing DNA. One guy I don't hear it so much from, is Vinnie Moore, but let's trace some more DNA guitar nerds. Go!

Paul Gilbert, Vito Bratta, Reb Beach, Joe Holmes, Marc Diglio, Steve Stevens, almost anyone from LA in the 80s, hell, almost anyone from the 80s period.

Vitto! That one is huge.. I will be 100% honest though, I almost prefer Vitto's tapping. His leads were a thing of beauty ..crafted incredibly and like they told their own story. But you are right, no Ed, no Vitto we love!

The two from the 80's that I immediately heard it was Nuno and Vito Bratta for sure. But I never felt they were ripping Eddie off in any way. I was actually pretty jazzed about both their styles.

For sure, Nuno stands out to me on his own as a complete monster and with a unique style and tone. The minute he riffs, you know it is him.

Interestingly enough, this guy was apparently a very big influence on Ed in the early days. They also knew each other. George Lynch confirmed this that the guy had all the chops but he didn't have DLR or the song writing that Ed has. Ultimately, the song writing is the most important so doesn't diminish the legacy in the slightest but no question here if this is 79, listen to those chops!

Vito Bratta was one of the ones I instantly heard "Eddie" in his playing. Nuno too, expecially on "Come Out and Play". There is Eddie signature all over that. I can't remember which country singer it is (Brad Paisley?) but one of them is a huge EVH fan and I thought I remember seeing some jamming on that.

Tony Iommi was dropping the E long before EVH.

Ok. So their first record dropped in 1990. The 80s went to 1989 so let’s not split hairs eh?

Terry Kilgore is Tube Tramp. He used to be active on forums and I bought tubes from him years ago. Definitely a character.

I think the title of this thread should be: "Which players do you NOT hear the early VH influence from? :D

lol so true... as for Kilgore, if he is tube tramp, I bought tubes from him years ago, he def. is a no nonsense kind of guy and could probably use a bit of softening around the edges. I think Lynch mentioned this as well..rough looking guy who liked to drink and then get in fights with people at the club. You can't doubt his influence on Ed but its a bit like he gave him some blueprints and Ed took it from there and blew it into the stratosphere.

Darren wouldn't agree with you. When I knew him he wasn't a huge fan. Paul Gilbert, Yngwie and Hendrix were his big 3.
