Ive had the smaller vhts-both of them, and the mesa 2-90,played em for years.Great in their own right-no complaints, but when I made the move to the big boys there was definitely an upgrade in tone, feel, and overall response.

Msn forget the power amps, I want that Nightswan!!!

I think there is a nice VHT power amp on craigslist san Francisco right now. I think I saw it within the last week, and if I remember correctly it was a great deal.

I tried it at The Axe Palace in Walpole Ma. Nick is a great guy...great store too.

There's a 2150 with a fresh quad of NOS GE 6550s for sale at The Tone Doctor in Texas for 1600 bucks...the tubes are worth 400 by themselves...this is a purple face...somebody grab this thing !

I got my 2150 two years ago with brand new gold lion AND winged C sets for $800 mint. I know mine is simple black but the colored prices seem totally insane to me! I also saw another one at that price shortly thereafter so it wasnt uncommon.

Lots of love for the 2150! I remember being in the front row at Vanhalens 0U812 tour/monsters of rock in Pitts.Pa. As I was within arms' reach of eddie many times over,I recall counting at least 4 or 5 2150s' in a rack just a bit beside eddie off stage.Coulda been either Sammys' or Eds', I dunno, but there were a mess of marshall 4x12 cabs under the stage facing almost straight up.Perhaps the 2150s were powering all those cabs..who knows?.I was too busy digging the show and in need of water- it was 105* in 3 rivers stadium that night.

I like the Classic, but my buddy preferred the 2150. Really depends on the rest of your gear and taste. The Mesa 2/90 is cool, but it's really not that much lighter, and without some sort of switching system you can't use the options on it.

Get this and never have to look at another power amp again.

awesome pweramp in its own right,it does best though with mesa products,Ive ran almost every preamp known to mankind thru a 500 and the mesa pre 's shined the best with it.It also likes soldano pre's and the cae3+.But, all of the pre's (mainly all the heavy hitters and big sellers),were a touch more " real amp feel" like and a little more authentic with a full size vht running after them.If you dig the 500, youll wanna check out the Mesa Coliseum poweramp. Its a beast too.The Marshall power amps are nice too.

Some how came across this thread now. WTH...finished work...might as well opine as I've had a lot of these power amps:

VHT 2150: super tight and punchy. Unbelievable. Only sold mine because I don't gig anymore.

VHT Classic: a bit warmer than the 2150. Sounded similar--not the same-- to the Soldano SM100r and I had three power amps at once. Hence I sold it. It does have more tonal variation than the Soldano power mono-block. The 2150 had a much different sonic footprint to both of these.

Fryette 2/50/2: mine sounds better than yours because it's a one-off purple. Sounds warmer than the Classic or other amps above but also sounds a bit smaller. Then again, EVERYTHING sounds smaller compared to the VHT 2150. Even Kanye.

Soldano SM100r: it doesn't matter what it sounds like. You'll never find one.

MESA/Simul-Class 290: I had it last century. Sounded darn good. But it was not purple.

A lot of the stuff below is gone.

Why not try the Fryette Power Station. It has a 50 watts tube power amp.

That's what I use in my rack since I run in stereo using an EVH 5150III 50w and a Soldano SP77 one preamp at a time sharing the Power Station and EVHs power amp. It works perfect since the PS and EVH are both 6L6 50w so I was able to dial in the PS to match the EVHs power amp sound very well. It also works great when I use it with my JMP and Vibrolux as an attenuator which is the other reason I went with it over a typical power amp. Since it's a mono power amp it rules out going stereo on its own however. Not sure how it stacks up to the big stuff like the 2150 since I've never tried one but I do know the PS sounds good and I have no complaints with it.

Pretty good assessment Jim. When are you going to send my Sm100r back... ;)

I like my 2902 but can't get it to stop blowing tubes.

These run tubes at really high plate voltage, you definitely won't want to use Shuguang's in it...

Your best shot at my SM100r is during ski season when I say to myself "Why do I have this?"
