those 2 pickups are quite different from each other. The nailbomb has tons more low end and tons more output.
I wouldn't suggest the nailbomb as a replacement in a Gibson les paul (where 498T's usually resident). It has to much low end, with the mahonie body/neck... it would be to much of a blur. I once installed a bareknuckle warpig (slightly more low and output than a nailbomb) in a PRS SCT, and that had way to much low end. I practically sounded like a bassplayer.
Also, the nailbomb prefers low tunings (C-B-A-...) and doesn't come out as good in a mix when played in a E or Eb tuned guitar. I installed one in a Jackson SL2, and played that in various tunings, and in my band, it didn't come out as good as I hoped it would, but we play in standard E tuning. I loved the sound when tuned lower though.

It's interesting, because I prefer brighter pickups with lower tunings.
How about EMG81? Can you compare 81s to Nailbombs?
Do you think Nailbombs would do good in a thin mahogany bodied guitar? Like an ESP Horizon. MOre importantly do they have any of that 498T PAF coolness, that lets the wood & guitar character come through?

I hate EMG 81's
From the ones I tested : The Mule : less output (say PAF) but a lot of clarity, and I mean A LOT! Since everybody that plays "metal" nowadays has a hi-gain amp with which you can't use half of the gain, you can certainly come away with a lower gain pickup. I have it installed in an ash jackson dinky

I'm actually about to ditch EMG81s in my LP. I was thinking of the painkiller in the bridge. From what I understand even c-bomb is pretty darn dark & my LP is really dark sounding.
Do painkillers have a lot more output & bass compared to 498s? 498s already have a lot of output.

painkillers probably have more output, but not more bass, yet more mids.

Talk to Nick Yoffe at the Axe Palace about the bare knuckles pickups as he knows them inside out and which ones to use in what woods etc. He is VERY knowledgeable and always glad to help. His pricing on Bareknuckles is very reasonable.
Nick highly recommends the painkiller for mahogany because it compliments it so well. This is the pickup that I am having him install into my Caparison Dellinger, which is a mahogany strat body. The pickup cost me $120.

Maybe rebel yell's will be a good choice im getting a pair soon made for les pauls.

Nolly on the Diezel forums uses them in all his guitars, amazing clairty, and 14k, not overly hot
